Default COLD AIR vs. SHORT RAM ... opinions?

Not sure what to do...

I want an all weather set up,

but, I hear the short ram just pulls hot air.

Ideas?

in theory , the cold air intake pulls in "cold" air. While the short ram pulls in "warm" air. So yes you did hear right. However, CAI (cold air intakes) are BAD BAD BAD for rainy weather. They tend to suck in water. This personally happened to me and I got lucky that it didnt waterlog my engine. But I have seen pics on here where it can suck up enough to totally ruin your engine. So, if " all weather" includes rain, i'd Highly suggest a short ram.

I went from a CAI to a short ram and as performance goes, I didnt feel any loss of HP. infact, I kinda felt a gain. very small, but it didnt bring the HP down.

The CAI intake I had was by AEM, and the piping was about 62 mm? Something like that. And the new short ram I got is 70 mm. So thats probably why I felt the gain in HP. So in my opinion, Short ram intake is the best way to go

BTW, when my CAI sucked in water, I had to replace my spark plugs... twice in the same week...

what about u use short ram, also make a custom pipe that directing fresh-cold air from outside (front) to the air filter location.

u can get the benefit of both systems.

There is a negligable difference between short ram and cold air intakes. Many people choose the short ram just because they don't want to deal with hydrolocking their engine. You can install a bypass valve on a cold air to prevent this, but that also reduces the power gains. Also, short ram intakes tend to give more low-end power than cold air intakes

Well, thanks so much for the the responses, I would really like low end HP gains cause since I did a cat-back, low end feels slugish. I supose that makes sense thou.. Once I get that intake on I'm sure that will go away.

thatbluecrx... Do you live in a not so rainy area?

thanx yall, hey is INJEN worth the money?

I dont think it really matters what intake you get. just get a nice sized one like 70 mm and a good filter. Im using a spoon filter and its working great. I got the pipe off ebay and Its a " no name brand " But who the hell looks at in intake pipe and says , Oh damn! he's got an AEM intake! It MUST be fast! .. lol .. no one. So dont worry about the brand as long as it comes with a big pipr and a filter.

long island ny, definitly a good amount of rain and snow, never a problem heres a quick story for you...

this happened on my D series...

its late and im chilling with some of my friends in the back of an industrial building... its pooring like crazy and has been for hours... there were a bunch of big long trailers so we figured lets pull inbetween 2 of them... i drive right on between and untill my motor just turned off i hadno clue i was in a puddle that was level with my side skirts ... before it hit me that im sitting in a few feet of water i tried to start it (doh)... so ZAPPPP sparks fly and smoke poors from, underhood... then i open my door to get out, which mind you is level with my car, me and 2 of my buddys take our pants shoes and socks off, run in there and push her out..
i'm bugging at this point, the batterys dead it wont crank, so i get a jump, and its crank crank crank poof poof crank crank crank poof poof.... sputter sputter spit pop crank crank VROOOOOM! puff puff sputter vrooosputter vroooosputter... 2 minutes later.. vroooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom

maybe i was lucky but that intake pipe/filter was FULLY SUBMERGED!

funny part is, i basically fried a hole in my intake cause as you guys know, the crx intake bends around the batter and must have bridged a gap through the water.. anyway just felt like sharing that, sorry if its pieced together looking lol

Air filters on CAIs are always dirty and nasty, I'd hate to see what gets past the filters.

On my ITR I dyoed the best CAI against the best shrt ram Intake. AEM CAI vs. The "Authentic" J's racing intake, both were ITR specific
J's racing 205whp 144tq
AEM 217whp 142 tq
Take into consideration that the car was tuned with a Hondata to the J's because I presumed it was better. The tq with the J's fell off way sooner than the AEM. In Addition, Shawn Church showed me that I coulda easily gained 3-5 more hp if I woulda tuned tothe AEM (It was way to lean above 8k). I guess good old american engineering isnt so bad afterall.
