I'm pretty sure this has been covered if you search, but to save you the time and tell you they're the same thing pretty much. You can just buy an OEM head gasket and remove the middle layer for half the price.

Considering that is what Spoon does anyway...

Mugen will get you a bit more compression.

Mugen = ~.4
Sp00m = ~.3

with what you just posted it will give you a bit LESS compression :-)

So 10.6+.4 (= 11.0) is less compression than 10.6+.3 ( = 10.9)? Didn't think so.

I have nearly 90,000 miles on my Mugen headgasket with no problems.

I think he thought that the post was head gasket thickness, not compression raising ability. I read it backwards too.

Are you using head studs or bolts?

Mugen's gasket is actually the marginally thicker of the two (unless Spoon has changed theirs), so ignoring possible minor differences in compressed height, the Mugen piece should yield a very slightly lower CR than the Spoon.

Also, regardless of what both manufacturers quote on their sites, all of the real-world figures I've come across indicate that actual CR increase of either gasket will be closer to 0.3 points max.

Finally, Mugen's gasket is not simply a factory gasket minus the middle layer, but is instead designed as an actual 2-layer piece. It appears to work quite well, and we've had no problems whatsoever with the one we installed on my brother's car last summer. Nothing that I've read indicates that the Spoon version is a reworked stock piece either, but I have no personal experience with that gasket. Perhaps someone like Mike M. could provide some more substantive information on that.

The original Spoon catalog had both a 1-layer (higher CR than Mugen) and a 2-layer (lower CR than Mugen). The 1-layer has since been discontinued, leaving the thicker, 2-layer left.

The product descriptions I located for the Mugen and Spoon 2-ply gaskets indicate .47mm and .45mm thickness, respectively. Granted, .02mm isn't a tremendous difference, but it was this data I was referencing when I stated that the Mugen piece would yield a very slightly lower CR.
