S2000 reliability and repair costs
Hey guys
I'm thinking about buying an S2000 and I was just curious if they, like other Honda's, are as reliable and what repair costs are like.
I have a mechanic who is a Genious, so I can get cheap labor...
Are parts expensive... things liek brakes?
------------
I just don't want a fun little roadster to be a pain in the ***...

Its a honda...so its reliable.
Aftermarket parts are not "cheap" as in like Civic or Integra cheap...but they arnt incredibly expensive. OEM parts are not anymore expensive than anything else...i mean you gotta keep in mind this car isnt a civic, so you cant really apply the thought process of your typical "cheap honda" to it...and of course your going to want to spend more money on higher quality oil and keep it serviced.
Its incredibly reliable...its a fun car and it has plenty of aftermarket support. Just to be bluntly honest, and take no offense to this, im just speaking my mind...if you are concerned about price of keeping it up AND you have a personal friend as a mechanic, this car might not be for you...not that you couldnt afford it, its just that since i've owned mine, the thought of expensive parts and what not has never crossed my mind...nor have i discussed such with anyone i know that owns one as well.
Its like they say "If you have to ask...you probobly cant afford it." It aint going to break your wallets *** every week like most european cars, but yeah...i think you get my point.

car is reliable, a few ppl have over 100k on them with no major issues. just like any other honda, do the maintenance and treat it properly, it will last. parts are more expensive, especially aftermarket. be aware of that

I have to agree with the above statement. It isn't like you are going to be working on it all the time, or from time to time, but it does take a bit more upkeep than the average civic. Tires are more expensive, or if you cheap out on them, it will bite you in the butt if you don't know how to control the car.

The stock Potenza SO-2's go pretty fast in the rear so plan on a new set every 2-3 years (depending if you only use them in the summer or not and how you drive). Besides that it's just like owning any other honda except on top of oil\tranny fluid you now have diff fluid to change too. Just so you know, the SO-2's suck in the snow so you really should buy a set of winter tires if you live in a snowy area and your s2k is going to be your daily driver. I picked up a set (4) of bridgestone blizzak LM-22's for about 580 shipped. I had a friend put them on at a tire shop that he manages for free but another friend tells me costco\priceclub can do it very cheap, and they never scratched his s2k wheels.

without looking...have there been test comparison's to the S0-2 and the 04-05 tires the RE-010?
i like my RE's...i've had no problems with them 'cept for they blister easily.

I estimate 6-12 months per set of tires give or take. With OEM S02's, I estimate 7-9K miles before they are gone, or 11K before they are shot. I've never replaced just the rear, but others who drive not as aggressively, will go through a set of fronts for every two sets of rears replaced.

thanks for the info guys
owning a modified car already I'm used to going through tires
I take my car to my mechanic because he's cheap, but REALLY honest. All the sales guys at the local Mazda dealership take their cars to him, instead of to their own mechanics. (I know you can;t really compare most Mazda's with an S).
His brother in law has a porsche and a 7 series... and he works on those.
I undertsand the point about the car not being for me if I have to think about those extra expenses. Its not that I can't afford it, its that I'm probably lookng at getting a house soon.. so I don't want to be blowing cash.
So far things sound good. I'll wait till summer to look seriously.
It will be a daily driver... but not in the winter. I have a beater right now that I'll keep. So it will only see the road 7 months of the year.

oh yea... as it stand right now I'm used to blowing a couple grand every summer on parts for the teg... so new tires and maybe an intake one year andd an exhaust the next isn't going to break the bank
and you can buy a used S2000 for the price of a new Civic

You can get the sound of the throaty intake without buying anything...just take the top of the air box off...if the sound is all that is important to you, personally we are just doing some cosmetic things to our's and leaving it be, the exhaust is fine with me, the intake is fine as it is (my wife likes it quiet so we just leave it alone) and we're just getting a CF hood, lip and powder coating the wheels black...might invest in the hardtop this year but we're looking for a really good deal.
I gotta say this though or i wouldnt be honest...as a daily driver i think this car sucks, im 6'4 230someodd pounds and i drive a CL-S daily, i could NOT drive my wife's S2000 daily, weekends its a blast, but daily i wouldnt do it myself...im a bit spoiled with my acura though.

It's not bad...but only for trips say less than 2 hours...we took it to the mountains and i didnt mind much (though when i got out i felt it a little)...the CL-S spoils me all over, and has my little asian chick telling me how to get places on the navi...hahah, the S2000 is like a big gokart...haha.
