Insurance question regarding 2 cars
First of all, I did search but could not come up with what I needed.
Basically i plan on getting a daily driver to replace the R and I had a few questions for you guys.
What types of insurance could I cover my R with? I only plan on driving the R on weekends, and probably only around 5000 miles a year. Is there any sort of cheaper types of coverage, and what are the negatives of those?
Also, if I did purchase a used car, would I have to have insurance for it right when I started driving it?
If anyone has any info that would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

I was told I had to make the car of more value the primary car. Is this true or no?
Also, do I have to have insurance for a car the second the ownership becomes mine?

You can make the R your secondary. Also, if you can't spring for the full coverage on the R you can get comprehensive or liability insurance, which is relatively cheap. I would only recommend this, if your only driving it to go on your favorite roads and back home, or to a friends house. Just no areas like movie theatres or malls etc. This type of insurance will not cover theft which as you know, is a big problem with these cars.

^^^^^^^ Word.
Although, getting a 2nd car will probably lower your insurance rate.
Good luck figuring it out.

I just insured my R and a 93 Civic and made the Civic primary. State Farm underwriters called my agent and said hell no the R is primary for loss reasons. Is this some bullshit or what? My agent even stood up for me and said we wouldn't be driving it to work and so forth due to where my girlfriend and I work, and that it was only a pleasure car. They didn't care.
Opinions? Any of you with State Farm and have your R as a secondary car?

Wow, that's pretty messed up. But, since you state that you're in WA state, I could see how they are compelled to take their action. They probably figure the one time you drive the R, it'll be gone in the area.
I say shop around for a different insurance.

to be honest with you, i actually did do that before i made this thread. my mom is chinese and her english is quite poor, meaning she prefers our agent to speak chinese, who also happens to have poor english. i tried to ask him these simple questions, but he either did not understand or answered a completely different question that i never asked. the effort you took to post those 2 replies is more than the effort it would have took to just simply answer my question if you knew the answer to my question. all im trying to get answered is a question so please i would wish that you only reply with something useful.

I think you may be taking what .RJ said out of context. I'm not speaking on his behalf or anything like this, but his statement probably has more truth in it than any others. The fact is, we don't know your driving record, and all the other scenarios that go into getting a quote.
Not to mention this insurance question stuff comes up in the ITR forum at least once a week. That's the only thing anyone can say... For all I know, none of us are insurance agents so we have no clue as to what is going to work for you. *shrug

Honda Tech is not your insurance underwriter. You wont get any answers of relevant value to your situation here anyways. If you have (or buying?) an ITR, then you can afford to stop freeloading off of your parent's policy and get your own, with whatever insurance agent you like.

I work with AIG Insurance, and you can have your hoopty as the primary, and your R as the secondary but the type r is ranked at a 24 out of a possible 27 which makes the insurance costs sky rocket, it will however make a slight difference putting the r for pleasure use but not that significant.
What i saw in our system is the r is ranked at a 24 where the nsx is ranked at a 27 the highest rating score for any car.
Whats even more interesting is the r is ranked higher than the 350z, srt4, mustang gt and even the vette

let me tell you,
I had 2 cars, 99 Integra Ls primary, 2001 Type R secondary, I got the multi car discount, and when i got rid of my 99 Ls, my premium only decreased $10/6 months...
so do what I did, with geico.

R ranked higher, because
1) average of R owners are alot younger than those other car owners. (younger=high insurance)
2)R has higher chance of getting stolen. because it's special

why do u have a problem if im still in school and insurance is currently payed for by my mother? your what i would call a hater...
and as far as driving location, and driving record...sorry if im mistaken, but i believe both of my original questions have nothing to do with driving location and driving record. i simply asked if there was a type of insurance that existed to insure an R that was driven primarily on weekends and less than 5000 miles a year.
i also asked
Also, if I did purchase a used car, would I have to have insurance for it right when I started driving it?
i believe my driving location and driving record have nothing to do with that either.
once again correct me if im wrong, but i dont think either of those questions have anything to do with driving record/location.

Actually, all these questions you are being asked come into play as far as your rates. Here are a few variables: Driving record, residence, age, credit rating (yes it is true), number of cars insured, other property insured, number of drivers at residence, number of drivers under 21, male/female.. the list goes on and on. I live in florida, it is state law that you have a insurance policy in effect at all times, and if it is a financed vehicle, most banks require FULL coverage, but that is florida. I receive a very considerable discount on my vehicles because: a) i have a clean driving record, b) so does my wife, c) i have a wife, d) i have more cars in the house than drivers (3 cars, 2 drivers) e) I insure my house and other valuables with the same company. I pay about 60$ a month per vehicle, (2 SUVs + the R). I list my truck as my primary and the R is my low mileage driver. Good luck with getting those rates if you are in school and your mom pays your insurance.

Yes, there is. It varies with different insurance companies, so you really need to call them for a better answer.

Yes, it will need to be insured the minute you get behind the wheel.

I don't recommend putting liability only on the car. Not only will it not cover theft, but it will also not cover collision. If there is a loan on the car, the lein holder will require that there be full coverage on the vehicle.

That has EVERYTHING to do with it! Thats what your insurance rates are based on
We cannot answer your insurance questions for you. Period. You need to discuss this with an insurance agent - yours, your mothers, someone else in the company, whatever.
The agents are paid to help you out and service your account. They have the answers. I dont understand why you are being so dense about this.
