Default Hyd. timing belt tensioner question

how do you reset the tensioner so that you can install the timing belt? I was told a couple of ways by some buddies, but you guys are the pros. I was going to buy all of the usdm parts and change it to a spring tensioner. Any ideas?

To compress the Auto-tensioner, you will need to put it in a vise and compress it...Make sure you put wood in between the surfaces to prevent damage....I used an 8'' tie-wrap to keep it compressed.

Keep in mind that a good portion of auto tensioners fail after being removed. They are a 1 time use part for most people.....

He's right about the one time use. That's why I converted to a H23 tensioner....

to compress the auto tensioner you do not use a vice. you first take the tensioner completely off. then you take the bolt off the back and there is a screw inside there behind the bolt. when you screw this it retracts the tensioner. and honda even sells a little tool that fits over it so it will not tension until it is installed and the timing belt is on.

the parts is 14540-P13-003 its 10 bucks.

#22 is the bolt you take off to access the screw. #25 is the little tool called the stopper the holds the auto tensioner

i find the easiest way to compress it would be to make an aluminum bracket to hold it down when you are screwing the bottom screw, but be careful when reusing the autotensioner, i have seen many fail, that's why i and alot of others have converted to the manual tensioner
