Default 5 point harness and OEM seat tech question

This is the harness kit I bought, G-Force C5140

The shoulder strap is a one piece section.

Can I just wrap it around my cage like this?

Will that pass tech and is it safe? Section 10:5 Driver-Restraint Systems has plenty of info about the geometry of shoulder staps but is kinda vague in the area of mounting them to the cage.

One more question... with an OEM seat do you have to fasten/attach the seat back to the cage or am I exempt from that rule using a factory seat?
Any help is greatly appreciated..
Thanks

you really cant wrap your harness around the bars... what people dont understand is when your strapped in the seats and you tighten it. Its really tight.. but say for instance you flip or roll over(god forbid) that harness will slip and slide with you. Im sure you can afford to spare a $100-200 for a nice harness which can be used with your application or get someone to weld either tabs or a handle which you can wrap the harness so it wont sway from side to side

I think I may have ordered the wrong harness.....I dunno. Maybe I should've ordered the C5000. Price was the same....maybe I messed up and didn't research enough.

Check out the C5000

Should the shoulder straps be bolted to tabs welded on the cage or do you just wrap them around the bar? Whats the best way to do this? I want to pass tech at every race and safety is very important.

if order for you to pass tech the C5000 would have been a better bet... that belt you can wrap the harness around the roll bar/cage and either make tabs or weld closed u shape loop around the bar

Just to clarify on the C5000 shown above. The two shoulder straps can just be wrapped around the bar on the roll-cage correct? I didn't think that you needed tabs to be bolted or welded to the bar...

send it back and get the C5000. You can borrow my harness if you need it.

My sources tell me........

Page 98 in general regs, 2005 NHRA Sport Compact Rulebook says "SFI spec 16.1 Y-type belts dated through 12/04 will be accepted through their two year service life." Check the date punched out on the SFI tag. If it's punched out with an 05 date, they won't be accepted. If they are dated December 04, or earlier, they'll be good until they expire. But even then, you won't be able to get them rewebbed or renewed, you'll have to get new ones.

I agree with g2turbo; your best bet is to return them and get the other set. That way you can have them renewed every two years (much cheaper than buying new ones all the time.)

In the meantime, if you're stuck with these belts and they have a date that's acceptable (12/04 or earlier), you can still use them. You have to wrap at least one full 360 degree wrap around the crossbar (it doesn't look like you have any wraps in the photo). You also need to weld some tabs on the bar to keep the belt from "sliding" back and forth, like Camp1320 talked about.

And...........while we looking at the photo, and this applies to anyone using a stock seat, the shoulder straps really shouldn't wrap around the sides of the seat like that. They should go through the seat back. I know, who wants to cut their seat? But strap yourself in the seat and tighten the belts. How do they fit your shoulders? Get yourself all strapped in, and ask someone to try and slip the shoulder belt off your shoulder. If it comes down off your shoulder.........easy to see that it will do the same thing if you get upside down or start bouncing off the guard wall. Check with an upholstery shop. I bet they can stitch a nice seam around the hole, and still come out way cheaper than an aftermarket seat.

Sorry if I opened a can of worms for some of you.

I did a little more checking, and the harness you have pictured, GForce C5140, is still legal. It's not the "Y-type" belt at all. This one is referred to as a "V-type" belt.

But everything else we talked about still applies; i.e. must have a full wrap, tabs, etc.

Sorry for the confusion, I should always have my coffee BEFORE getting on H-T.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm gonna get the C5000 and use g2turbos harness this weekend.
