Default Opinions on GSR build...

Ok, I'm doing a budget build for my daily. I wanted to get some opinions on the plan of attack.

OK, starting with a full GSR swap that needs rebuilding. I was going to put Type-R pistons in it. The previous owner fried a valve so I am going to have a valve job done and a complete aftermarket valve train. Haven't decided on the springs and retainers I will use. Feel free to put in .02 on the valves, springs, and retainers.

I'm swapping a spare tranny with another shop for a set of ITR cams if they are 98 and later. So, I will start with those and upgrade later.

I also have a spare LS block lying around that I can swipe the crank and rods from. Would you do this? Being that I will want the extra RPM's later when i upgrade the cams to a more aggressive profile, will I be cutting my legs out from under me going with the LS parts and taking away from my top end capabilities?

The GSR crank and rods are fine so I can use those. I'll be upgrading the rods and head bolts either way as well. The crank will be turned 10 thousandths all the way down to make it uniform and run ACL or Cleavlite 77 bearings. I have always been part of the OEM bearing camp but my old Honda foreman raced the motors he built for years with this set up and has never had a failure living at 9 grand in his race motor. One of the better machinists we use chalks the color coded thing up to compensation for the short comings in mass production and doesn't use them either. So, i figured I'd give it a try.

What kind of compression ratios am I looking at?

It'll be run on a S100 Hondata. What kind of power could I expect out of this thing? Sorry this ran long and thanks in advance to who ever took the time.

i just rebuilt my gsr with jdm itr pistons and new bearings i left the head alone for now. the comp. is about 11.6, i havent got a chance to get a chipped p72 or cams but i know i need them. it feels a hell of alot better but is severely undercammed with the stockers. only if money came that easy, huh? i recommend this setup!

Anyone with some advice on the LS crank part. I need to get this thing to the machine shop but am waiting for some feed back from those who have gone this route.

Unless you want to go crazy with it, don't go for the LS crank ordeal, it'd be better to sell the complete LS shortblock and put the money to use elsewhere. Also, a tranny is worth more than Type R cams are. Sell the tranny and then buy cams, you'll probably have enough left over to afford springs and retainers.

Ahh,it's a spare d16y8 tranny. I had it from when I still worked for Honda. I rebuilt it in case my GF tore up another onelearning how to drive stick in my car. It's been sitting forever and a different local shop I'm friends with are die hard SOHC n/a fans. They are always chewing them up in thier drag car and need it more than me. I have built so many of those things I can pull em, build em and be one the road by lunch. i see it as a big paper weight but need the cams. Thanks for the feed back Kendall. I'll build the motor and everything so "crazy" only depends on hard parts cost/machinist cost and anything I have laying around is for the taking. I'm about to go back to working for Acura so i can get spent B18 blocks for free. they threw away 5 recently before I could pick them up so I'm not worried about raping the one I have if it'll be worth it in terms of power. I can replace it. I turned down another freebee last week. There is just no where to put all of this **** in our little shops so locals swap for what we need "right now" often. Keep it coming.....
