Car wont go into gear. Clutch gone?! Please help immediately
89 civic si. sohc zc.
clutch has been slipping for a week or so and i havent been driving it.
just drove it and got on it pretty good, wound out 1st and shifted into second, the car wheel hopped like it never did before and i thought i heard a bunch of metal clanking.
now it wont go into gear while the car is on. when its off it takes a bit of finesse for it to finally go into gear. i'm thinking something in the trans shattered? or could it be the clutch is 100% done? I need information as soon as possible.
If you could email me at wompwomp61@aol.com or get to me on aim at rainxrainxdownx it'd be great seeing as i only can only posts a few more times. thanks!!

is there anything you can do about this? while replacing the clutch lets say? since the trans is already gonna be dropped.
like i said it goes into gear..but only when the car is off and even then it takes some finagling to get in. and then i have to start it in gear to get it movin and stay in the gear because i cant switch gears.

possible, but a dying TOB sounds REALLY REALLY bad. Itle sound like metal to metal screaching.

i'm most likely unable to do this. i've never tried this before..dont really have the tools nor the know how. i'm sure picking up a helms would help though. i also wouldnt know what i'm lookin for

man i told you get the clutch from me and i will help you put it in new plate clutch and thorw off and call it a day!
sounds like what happened to me. One thign you didnt mention, how ever, is what does your clutch pedal feel like? What i think might have happened, is there are rivits on the clutch disc. On mine, one broke, lodged itself between the clutch and flywheel, and kept the clutch engaged. I could onyl move it by starting it in gear, couldnt change gears unless car was off, and the cluthc pedal was loose. I didnt have any tools either, had never worked on a car, and didnt have a manual. I went to sears, spend 250 on tools, held my engine up with a beer cooler, and dropped the tranny by my self. a clutch swap/tranny swap IS NOT that difficult. believe me, this was my first wrenching on the car, other than short shifters/intake/cat, bolt on stuff.
the clutch pedal doesnt seem any different than it normally does. what you describe is pretty much whats happening with mine minus the loose pedal. i also have no wrenching experience but if its as simple as you make it seem without having done much before, i'll have a crack at it.
not likely a tob, and almost certainly not an input shaft bearing. c'mon. you'd be hearing that when it runs in gear OR in neutral.
I'd say it's almost 100% a busted hub spring, that probably lodged something against your clutch. same idea as what recluse is saying, and it could be a rivet or something, but a hub spring is much more common.
You *should* still be able to drive it though, but no further than necessary. If you can't disengage your clutch, just start it in 1st or reverse like you said, and then when you get up to 3k or 3500 rpms, you should be able to pull it out of gear (it'll be tough, but it will pop out), then give your engine a second (to drop roughly 1k rpms) before trying to put it in the next higher gear. If you don't get it the first time, give it a quick rev in neutral to get your rpms up and try it again. Also, if you need to shift down, you'll have to give it a rev before you can hit your gear.
It takes a little practice, but I had the same problem just a couple weeks ago, and I drove it 100 miles from Butler PA to my g/f's house in Johnstown, then 10 miles to the shop, then another 80 miles to Uniontown when I got tired of waiting for the mechanic to fix it. I wouldn't recommend driving that far to anyone without a clutch, but desperate times call for desperate measures!
Edit: if you're interested, I'll try to post a pic of my old busted clutch so you can see what I mean about the hub spring.

If you threw a hub spring, lodging something against your clutch, you *have to* replace your clutch, and it's pretty much a given that you replace the tob when you change the clutch. Of course you'd want to double check your clutch cable before you rip into something bigger.

you still need *some* room for movement to shift gears smoothly even with the engine off. give it a try... try running your car for a second in neutral, then shut it off, and see how easy it is to get into first without using the clutch. sometimes you'll get lucky and it'll go right in, but alot of times it's tough. it doesn't seem like a big deal, but I know from experience that trying to get into 1st or reverse (since they have no syncros) can be tough sometimes without disengaging the clutch. that's the biggest pain in the *** about driving it without a clutch. sometimes it's a little easier though to try and get it into 2nd or 3rd before putting it in first (with the engine off).

maybe your right but i was under the assumption that the clutch wasn't needed to switch gears when the engine was off..
you guys are good at diagnosing. I didn't contribute to this thread, but I was having the same tranny problems as mentioned and came across this thread a few days ago. I read it, obviously and got my clutch changed. GetCaughtDead you hit my problem dead on.
The clutch was GONE! and the little spring thingy was messed up and coming out of the disc. But, I got that fixed yesterday though. I am one to try fixing things on my own, but this time I shelled out $250 to get it done.
