Default Radiator overflow tank....how NECESSARY is it?

Cleaning up the engine bay a bit and the only thing that really stands out and is very ugly is the overflow tank with the line running to it from the top of the radiator. Have any of you guys just gotten rid of this thing or what? The fluid level in it never really changes so im just wondering if its really important.

I could be wrong but I alway thought it was for if you start to over heat the fluid has a place to go instead of blowing everywhere.

My fathers car doesnt have one stock..And when the fans stopped working a while back it overheated and the coolant went everywhere..

You can always get a cylinder shape overflow tank and hide it,,They're all over ebay..Almost look like catchcans

any more opinions? I have a spoon 1.3 radiator cap, does this make any kind of difference if I wasnt using an overflow?

Yes it has to be there. THis is where the system releives excess pressure and coolant.

You need the tank!

The reason is that the radiator cap is lower than some of the water passages within the head. So, you can't get all the air out by just filling the radiator.

What happens is that the air that is in the system works it's way out when it expands (due to heat) and blows out into the tank. When the system cools off, it sucks back fluid (that's why the tank draws from the bottom).

So it just lets air out into the resevoir, then takes a lil water on once all the air is out? I thought it constantly takes water in, and takes water out everytime you drive it?

It will let air out of the system if you have rescently opened the cap...if not it only lets liquid in/out. That's why there is a tube from the top of the res to the bottom.

I removed my stock crappy 1000 sided coolant res and relocated a little smaller clear container to make room for my breather tank.

After a hard drive the tank is 3/4 full of liquid as the cooland has expanded in the system and pushed the rad cap to release some pressure.

After it cools down to room temp the tank is 1/4 full as the coolant has contracted and sucked back in ONLY LIQUID per the tube from top of tank to the bottom.

Cliffs notes: you need it.
