Default Disabling the automatic choke

I have a JDM Del Sol SiR and I am losing way too much fuel everytime i start up my car in the cold because the automatic choke comes on. Is there a way to disable the choke be reprogramming the ecu using something like Hondata?

unless you retrofitted a carb on your car, you don't have an automatic "choke". it's an electronically controlled air idle valve, commonly reffered to as the "IACV".

the valve is there to help your car warm up faster when cold. it really doesn't increase consumption that much. once you're driving, you're already above the cold idle speed (~1800 at most) anyway.

Trust me, when i start my car from cold and start driving (which is usually straight on the freeway), my fuel consumption falls a noticeable amount for the first 10 minutes or so.

Could it be that my IACV is faulty? The car is now 13 years old...

sounds like something else to me... maybe a faulty injector dumping too much fuel... but i doubt the iacv would be causing it...

Personally, I'd do a couple things.

1st - Do a tune up if you haven't done so in a long time, you might want to replace the O2 sensor as well...

2nd - Check the fuel pressure. Check for fuel leaks.

3rd - Reset the ECU!

4th - No more m4d vt3k driving sk1llz playa! Slow down stunna, it's not gonna kill you to stay under 3k rpms...

--After all this crazyness, then I guess check out your injectors. Even though it's not very likely, perhaps one of them is all jacked up. It's really cheap to find a set of used OEM injectors around here.

Thanks for the advice guys. Remember this only happens when i start from cold... once the engine has warmed up, fuel economy is fine.

Could be the O2 sensor - i don't think that's ever been replaced.

I can best desbribe it like when you take your car over 75 miles an hour or engage vtec, your fuel economy suffers and see the needle drop a little bit.

Will be having my car tuned very soon - will take on your advice on board. cheers.
