why is paintscratch.com so expensive
i went to that site to look at B-47M blue for my crx. One gallon is 291.00 and they make
you buy the clearcoat which is 100.00. Is it me or is this a little ridiculous.
Why cant i just go to home depot or sherwan williams and get a gallon for $25.
Paint is paint right? i can understand expensive clear coat but $100 is still kinda high.

Some paint is better than others. you can find some paint that is cheap then you can compare it to the price of ppg and there will be a big differnce
But cant they just mix up a batch of paint from the paint code and use their version of good paint and it be under $100
Im sure there must be good inexpensive ($25-100) paint that will look good. Right?

Wrong! You cant just go to any paint store and buy paint for a house and put it on your car. The paint on your car is made from a very durable polyurethane while most home paints are either latex (which will fall off) or oil base (which doesnt spray well).
The reason you were quoted paint with a clearcoat is because you must have been looking at a dual stage paint (base and clear coat). You can go with a single stage paint that will be easier to spray and will last just as long provided the proper maintenance. You can get a gallon of single stage polyurethane PPG for under $100 and I believe that includes hardener, but you will also need reducer.
If you are buying paint for your car do you have someone to spray it for you? It would be pointless to buy paint if you dont have the spray equipment.
Another option would be to buy a gallon of paint and have some of it put into aerosol cans if you want to do some touch up. I believe the going rate is around $5 to $10 a can. So you would buy a gallon and have them put some of it into aerosol cans for you and you keep the remaining paint for future use.
Go to your local auto body paint supply store and ask the people there for assistance, they should be able to point you in the right direction!

I smell trouble...
If you don't know the difference and you're unwilling to listen to what you're being told...you probably shouldn't be painting your own car.
Take your paint code to a local body shop. See what they charge to mix up a batch of the proper type of paint.

It's just for touch-ups and small items, not for the entire car. I primered and painted my temporary hood with Duplicolor spray cans, and it is chipping off down to the metal 6 months later.
PPG or Deltron is the way to go for automotive paint.

Do I need to repeat myself!
If you cant afford good quality paint than you will just be wasting your time. The point I was trying to get across about the paint in most hardware stores is that they dont carry polyurethene paints or even a decent laquer for car applications.
If you cant afford a gallon of PPG then get a quart and have them throw that into an aerosol can for touch-ups. I have even heard of people painting a whole car with color matched aerosol paints. And I honestly dont think that $291 for a gallon of good quality paint is that much considering 1 quart of House of Color paint can go as high as $300.
Again look into a single stage paint. I payed $231 for a gallon of PPG DCC single stage that included hardener which was enough to paint my whole car with about a quart left over for future touch-ups.
Also what kind of spray equipment do you have? If you think that a house paint gun will work you are mistaken! Honestly if you are asking these kind of questions than you should have a proffessional paint your car.

Because they only use Maaco brand paint which they can get cheap since they make it or have another company make it for them. And a $200 paint job from Maaco wont last a year. Trust me I have seen it many times.
Let me put it this way. My uncle had a van painted at maaco for $800. They only put on like 2 coats and didnt prep the surfaces correctly. Not even a month later the paint was peeling off and rust began to form all over the car. When we first got the van back we looked at it and decided it was so crappy that my uncle stopped payment on the check! Its up to you. You definately get what you pay for in auto body! If you can, save up around $1000 and have a private shop paint your car for you. Look at the cars that are coming out of the shop to see what kind of work they do and never pay up front.
Krylon paint in a spray can less than 4$ a can. about 18-26 for average outside only job- put it in tubbs of hot water before you paint, work slowly, and light coats are key, and yes flat black is the new bling, especically with gold wheels.
What! Krylon! That's straight Ghetto! If you guys want your cars to look like crap then by all means go ahead. I suppose you paint right over the moldings too
so what if i do the proper prep work. will the maaco job be a good idea.
its getting painted the same color anyway
also ive had to touch up cars with spray paint before and it last for as long as i had the cars. Your saying can paint last longer than maaco

If you are buying PPG and getting it put into a can and do the proper prep work it will easily outlast maaco. Basically all of the chemical and UV resistance of the PPG will still be in the paint when they charge the can. The Maaco paint is like buying the cheapest quality paint they sell in an auto body paint supply store. Think about it. If Maaco is doing paint jobs for $200 than for them to even make a profit at a $65 an hour shop rate then the paint supplies must only cost like $20-$50. If it takes about 3 hours to prep and paint a whole car then you are left with $5. I'm not even sure how they make a profit at that rate. So without making much profit per job they have to compensate by using cheap quality materials and get cars in and out as fast as they can. It is clearly evident that they will only make a profit and stay in business by using Maaco paints. Maaco wont use any other paint. I called before and asked if I could have a car sprayed with PPG paint that I would buy and they said no. It's the same for any other franchise paint shop like One-Day and Earl Shibe. They have to use their own cheap products to make a profit. However I cant really say anything bad about One-Day paint as I have seen some of their work and it looked pretty good. It will also depend on the shop. Some shops do better than others!
Exactly. Maaco / Earl Shieb is bad news.
Auto painting is ALL in the prep work. And if you bother to do good prep work, then spend the cash to get quality paint.
Use the car paint in a spray can for small stuff.
OR, if you want a full paint job look at your local community colleges and do it yourself. I took a summer class for beginner auto body and was able to prep and booth paint a car in a six week class. All I had to pay for was tuition and supplies.
