Default A/C belt snapped off today

Well, I was driving my integra today and I heard loud squealing noises coming from under the hood and then my car suddenly died. I thought it was the alternator but then I realized that the A/C belt snapped right off and it smelled like burnt rubber.

Is it still safe to drive my car without this belt? Is my A/C unit seized or do I just need to replace the belt? I still cant figure out why the car died if it wasn't my alternator.

What do you guys think? Thanks in advance.

On my 95 ls the belt for the ac is Only for the ac and nothing else. Most cars run like that i think?

But i don't see any reason that it would be bad for your car to run without the belt.
Dunno why it would of died either.

i don't know why it died...i would think that the a/c belt would just leave you with no cool air. maybe the a/c belt wasnt the only thing that broke...

yeah that's weird if it died, the a/c belt busting wouldn't really do anything but stop cool air. Check your alternator belt soon.

There is no problem whatsoever driving without the a/c belt, you just won't obviously have a/c Anyway, as far as dying goes maybe the belt got caught up some weird way? Was the a/c belt old? If so the compressor is prob fine, the belts can break if they're perished or cracked through age and wear. Definately check the alternator and p/s belts asap, might as well replace all 3 anyway, it's not a big job really...good luck

Yeah, I checked all the belts and the power steering and the alternator are both working in proper order. I think the AC belt got tangled up in some type of manner to cause the car to suddenly die. I purchased a new AC belt also to determine whether or not it was just the belt or the entire AC unit. I never use the air conditioner anyways.

Thanks for the advice.

While you have the belt off, try to spin your idler pulley, it should spin freely. If the bearing in the idler pulley goes, it will sieze and throw the belt off or kill the engine. Also spin your a/c pulley and see if it spins freely while the a/c is off.

My 92 Integra RS had the idler pulley go and locked up in traffic. I pulled over, cut the belt with a knife, rolled the windows down and was on my way, no harm done. But the damn idler pulley cost $32 from Sunnyside acura online, and to replace, you just have to unbolt the ps pump and set aside, then you have a direct shot at the idler pulley.

You don't have to buy a whole new pulley, you can just get the bearing (it's a generic size) for like $12 and swap it into the pulley. You just undo the allen key and the pulley comes apart.

Surely you know if you replaced the timing belt?!! The other 3 belts have to come off to do it.

Anyway, pretty easy job, take off the left wheel and take down the plastic engene cover behind,, you can see everything then.

i betcha it's the idler pulley...mine seized up on me and did the same exact thing.....the reason your car died is probably due to the belt slowing way down real fast, or the belt got caught somewhere and jammed up the altenator belt....

i just cut my ac belt off and have yet to replace the idler...probably just replace the bearing, or might just get the whole pulley, i think i see a little wear on the pulley anyway from the pulley dragging for a while.....

as far as not having the belt, you obviously have no AC, but as long as you get it fixed within a year or so, the compressor should be fine.....just good to have it on eventually to cycle the compressor and get the refridgerant/oil moving around in the system so it doesn't get any dry spots that could cause a problem in the distant future....

you can cheat by just taking the bolts out of the motor mount and prying it from the frame and slipping the belt in rather than pulling everything apart....along with the P/S of course.....

Well only thing is, you would have been taking the other 3 belts off to do the T-belt anyway...I'ts not really going to make a whole lot of difference really, except to your wallet of course
