Does the immobilizer on 2000-2001 help much?
I've been wanting to sell my older BMW and get a 2000/2001 model LS, GS or GSR for my commute.
But one of the things that keeps me from buying it is the high theft quotient on these cars.
I am aware of all the various methods that thieves can break into Acuras (no need to go into all of them please)
I am just wondering...
---When Acura added the immobilizer feature on the 2000-up Integras, did this help to reduce theft much?
I've searched on H-T, and google, but could not find much info. I also called my insurance rep but they did not have any info either.
Thanks

It seems to have helped a little bit at least, 2000 and 2001 Integras are not on the top 10 most stolen list, while 1994-1999 Integras are.
The only thing that really changed was the immobilizer, or maybe the fact that newer, more expensive cars are sold to higher income people who live in safer areas? I think 2000-2001 Integras sold as well as the previous years, so I don't think it was due to sheer numbers available to steal.

Ah, good to know! I actually had searched for this information but all the public information sites I had found did not offer much granularity in their search options.
Thanks
Anybody else have any feedback, opinions, observations?
Thx

i'm curious as well. however, i feel that as the immobilizer might add more peace of mind, you shouldn't rely on that as a sole source for theft prevention (and therefore shouldn't base your decision on buying an integra only on this). there are a number of other theft deterrents you should consider as well if you decide to buy an 00 or 01.

I couldn't agree more, I had an alarm for the 5 years I owned a 2000 GSR. I never had any problems with theft even though I lived in the theft hotbeds of NoVa and SoCal - but I doubt that was because of the immobilizer. Of course, only 6 months after selling it and buying a 92 Integra LS with large dents and 130k miles, somebody breaks in and steals my office parking card.
I definitely think the immobilizer helps (for now), but should be part of a multi-layer theft prevention effort.

yea i agree on that it slows them down a little bit
and alarms r just a waste of money unless you get the one with the receiver that lets you know when your car alarm goes off so then you know that you need to go out side with a baseball bat

2k-2k1 are not stolen as much as 94-99's but there are still many cases of them being stolen. Some theives have somehow found ways around the immobilizer (also can be applied to S2000's and RSX's). Layers of security is key but even then it does little against tow trucks.

Tow trucks, and some thieves carry spare ECU's if they know what they're looking for. (They might only bother doing that for a 00/01 Type R, or maybe GSR I guess).

im sure thieves carry a spare removed immobolizer ecu...if not....they can hold any obd2a ecu with ecu jumper and will probaly work the same...any good thief will get the car they want....i think immobolizer are useless.....
so does thieves..

The immobilizer is not hard to get around. It stops amatuers simply because getting around it requires about $200 dollars in parts (I'm not going into it). So since people who steal **** are poor, most won't have that, therefore it helps. IMO it is not by any means a GOOD theft deterant. Your car may still get broken in to anyways, for them to only find you have an 00-01...

Do RSX and S2000 have to worry about this? Since they've always had an immobilizer? What if you always park backwards with car in gear and e-brake on? (I guess they could just break the window)

thats a good point.
always have layers of security to slow theives down, but when it comes down to it, if the theives want your car that bad, sadly, they'll take it. You just wanna slow them down so they can either get caught or give up.
Twice theives tried to break into my car in the same place, both times they got caught.

^^ as mentioned it wont prevent any theft but its a good extra layer of security..i have an 01 gsr along with an alarm and couple other layers. id rather have an immobilizer than not. it may deter the rookie theif out for a quick steal becuase it does require some effort to work around. also you can take some time and secure your ecu better so its hard to bypass

Not every gsr has it. At least they didnt tell me mine has it
To whoever posted the stripped Ls pic...I cant believe they took the engine! What does an LS engine go for? You are lucky the left the dash, steering wheel, and cluster.

Alright --- thanks for all the great replies guys. Excellent information.
...I'm sure glad I asked this question on this board. Been meaning to post it for like 6 months already.
Sleeping_integra: Holy smokes, I can't believe they went after your "lowly" GS model. Especially since they pulled the motor. -just amazing. Sorry man, that really really sucks
After reading all these posts, I'm starting to re-think getting an Integra now.
Although it *is* the PERFECT commuter vehicle by almost all criteria, worrying about it not being there when I get off work is probably too much for me.

I think so I just get the contents of my car stolen
How ever the rest of the sweet finacial burden is there every morning.. I wish they would just steal the car and get it over with at least then it will be paid off instead off me having to replace the crap they take.

Even with a immobilizer they can still jack your gsr or type r by using a ecu without a immobilizer (94-99 integras or even use a 99-00 civic si ecu)
