i've never actually smelled it burning, but most R's at least burn a little off..

when did you smell it and how much/fast is the oil level dropping?

You could have a small oil leak onto the header. The header usually takes about 3 minutes or so of driving before it gets hot enough to burn any oil on it, is that usually about how long you drive before you smell it?

When I first bought my R it was buring up my MObile 1 synthetic, more then two quarts so the Acura dealer replaced my motor. With my new motor which was babied and carefully broken in I still burn oil but the amount greatly depends on driving conditions. ALso DO NOt go from synthetic oil back to normal oil, that is a likely cause to cause your motor to eat oil Good Luck with your car

I dont spread rumors. I'm telling what I have seen time and time again. Synthetic Oil is often used in higher performance engines because of its superior ability to lubricate, helping prevent deteration from friction and heat. It does this because the componds are able to penetrate into much smaller pores of the metal. So after breaking your car in with synthetic oil, your engine's metal composition becomes accustomed to that particular type of lubrication. If you switch from Synthetic 10W30 to normal 10W30 you no longer have the same penetration of oil protecting your motor so heat and friction are likely to the deteriorate piston rings or valves which will cause you to burn oil either through blow by (oil escaping through the exhaust system) or internally when it burns up in your fuel mixture during combustion. Go to School you might learn something, I know I have

From my research i also agree with chris. The nature of synthetic lubircates very well, but once the engine becomes used to this, you can't ever switch back without oil comsumption/loss.
On the oil burning topic, is there a leak under the car when it sits? Does it burn oil without any drips? My car (PR3 Head, P72 Block) burns 1qt/500miles - probley due to rings, out of round cylinder, ect - but does not let a single drip on the ground.

i use stock honda 5w30 and after ripping vtec alot i smell this beautiful aroma

i could probably go about 3k miles without needing to fill up any oil, but thats assuming i drive like a sane person. i have burned about a quart in about 1000 miles before when driving aggressively constantly. if u hit vtec alot, i would say ur just smelling the aftermath. if ur losing lots of oil then maybe u have a problem one of these techs could help you with

good luck

Nope, none, never. Just kidding. Search, and you shall find weekly "is this normal?" threads.

Get a compression test and leakdown test. Hopefully it'll help show the problem.

Otherwise, you'll have to start guessing based on when it smells/smokes. Smoking at WOT? In my limited experience that means there's a lot of blowby, causing oil to get into the intake via valve cover breather or PCV. Or you're just burning it the old fashioned way, getting oil around the piston rings.

does the B18C5 feature FRM cylinder walls? i know the f20c features FRM cw's and contributes to the burning of oil.

btw its normal for DOHC VTEC motors to run rich during vtec engagement AND to burn off oil from time to time. just make it a habit to check your oil level often.

Nerp, no FRM liners in the B18C5. They're cast iron I do believe.
