I've never owned a D16Y8, but most people claim ~5200 RPM, which is different from the D16Z6's 4800 RPM point.

^ agree

Also, please note that it's shouldn't be a "kick". It should be a smooth transition, only minutely audible if at all on a SOHC.

And if you're too numb in the head to figure it out, take off your intake tubing and your axleback exhaust section and then the entire town will be able to hear when VTEC engages.

That's what I was going to say earlier -

My Z6 with panel filter and no resonator = noticable VTEC X-over

Newer Y8's = not so noticeable

You could always wire up an LED to the VTEC signal wire - nice visual indication that it's working.

nowhere near, the z6 is easily audible but much less than a b-series engagement, if you really want to hear it get some itb's and run open header

provided that the car is up to temp, the oil pressure is good it should kick in at around 4500 + or - a small amount. Honestly the Vtec (on a SOHC) is difficult to distinguish from a car entering its peak rpms and pulling hard. This is due to the fact that all it is doing is effecting your intake valves vs. on a DOHC that changes both the intake and exhaust valves.

It is right around that somewhere when I barely hear it, lol. And no, never messed with it. Actually might be 5400, can't remember if it was before or after 5500, lol. I'll research it tomorrow.
