Default A Good Lesson For S2K Owners:Please Read!

The latest BMI video "The Battles At 10,000 RPM" presents a good lesson for all S2K owners. Everyone who is thinking about stroking your F20C or have the newest F22C should pay attention to the segment which features the J's Racing, Spoon, and C-Ken S2Ks in a 5 lap battle.

The J's Racing S2K which competes in the Super Taikyu Series is being driven by JGTC/Formula Nippon Champ Jyuichi Wakisaka. The J's S2K has a F20C stroked to 2.2 liters and a redline that was tuned to 8K rpm and beyond. To make a long story short, Wakisaka drives the **** out the car for 3 laps. BTW, this is on a wet circuit.

Well on what looks to be the end of the 3rd lap, Wakisaka drives the J's car out of one of the chicanes and the nearest camera catches a humungous flame come from under the car. The Spoon S2K, driven by Keichi Tsuchiya, and it's in-car cam catch the giant flame and smoke come from under the stricken J's S2K from behind. As Tsuchiya catches up, the flame goes out and Wakisaka, who has already slowed, pulls over and hops out to get away from the car. Tsuchiya pulls the Spoon S2K over and the race is obviously stopped.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what happened. Continuous revving past 8k rpm by the J's stroked 2.2 liter engine resulted in a engine that let go and "grenaded" itself. During the post race interview, Tsuchiya says something to the effect that the fact that the car was fast as a result of the bigger engine means nothing if it doesn't ultimately work or last! He goes on to say that one of the goals of his Hot Version series is "to show the viewers what works and what doesn't." Wakisaka puts on a fake smile and makes some jokes but it is obvious the situation isn't funny at all. IMO, I don't think it's completely the drivers fault because I'm sure the tuners knew what could happen also. The in car cam aimed at the dash display clearly showed where the redline was set(about 8K rpm) and the engine was being revved past this almost every time the driver shifted.

This is just one more reason that anyone who still thinks that a stroked F20C or OEM F22C can be revved safely past 8K RPM is a complete ******* MORON! IMO, getting away with it a few times doesn't mean ****! BMI even flashes a disclaimer stating that a 2.2 liter motor reaches the same piston speed at 9K rpm as a 2.0 liter motor at 10k rpm. If a fully blueprinted, balanced, and tuned J's Racing motor couldn't stand up to overrevving, what makes one think that an OEM or engine built by an average tuner/builder will? Safe to say that J's Racing motor was in excess of $10K and now it's complete toast!

Cliff Notes:J's Racing 2.2 liter F20C blows up due to overreving on a BMI DVD for all the viewers to see.

EDIT: The J's Racing S2K mentioned above is their Time Attack version and not the Super Taikyu Version.

Is it exactly sure that the fire came from the motor? I mean how many different ways can fire start in an engine bay?

I'm not saying the motor wasn't over-reved or anything....but the F20c was designed to rev to 10,200. The 9000 rev limiter is there for "safety".

Trying to say that the J's motor gave out definitely due to continuous high-rpm could be a bit presumptious....then again, I didn't see the video.

I do imagine thought that if a motor is over-revved past the block's limits, or the limits of any of the moving parts in the motor, I'd figure of seeing more a "grenading" motor. Seeing this in front of me on a track is quite obvious. Metal parts come flying off the car in front of you, the shards of metal hit your car, the flame that comes from the car in front is more blue-ish and is more of a "spark-up" rather than a flame, and potentially, the hood goes flying up and onto the track.

Um.. Watch the tsukuba race in the same video. J's s2k on tsukuba, driven by Orido, was consistenly revving to 8400 rpm.
