I just went and got a sodering iron from radio shack(7 bucks). Then just used Soder-Wick Desodering Braid. Also make sure you get some Flux, Alcohol and brushes to clean everything off. Get size 1 desodering braid. The sodering I have isnt the greatest for this stuff because of the watts(15W). But it gets the job done. I cant afford a $1000 Metcal sodering station. So this will suit me fine.

If you're already looking to spend $200 - THIS METCAL only costs $50 more.

I solder/desolder stuff everyday - it is a helluva piece with excellent heat control.

That is way overkill unless you are going to be doing some very sensitive work.

Radio shack special is all I need to do ecu's. Desoldering tool (not the braid) works nice too, also from radio shack

Agree.

The soldering iron I have is a weller WLC100. Its the **** it has adjustable temp, stand, sponge and gets hot as hell fast. They can be had for about $40~$60.

And to remove solder you can use a sucker which go for another 10 bucks.

EDIT: also because weller is a pretty common brand tips for it can be found at allot of places.

my 8 dollar radio shack has helped me chip 4 ecus w/o any problems.. Unless desoldering is your occupation or u do it often, the radio shack piece is pretty good in my opinion.. just get some old computer boards and practice on that 1st b4 tackling ur ecu..

OH, i also modified the radioshack gun by adding a rubber extention hose to the suction bottle line so i have more stability and can concentrate on heating up the solder..
