I'll probably get flamed right off the board for asking this but...why do JDM parts escape the "rice" stereotype? I'm refering only to cosmetic mods such as integra front end conversions, spoon carbon fiper lips/spoilers/mirrors, anything mugen etc. There are a lot of people on this board who are ridiculed for their cosmetic mods while other people with Jdm parts (cosmetic) are congratulated on tasteful mods. Rice has been defined as anything which does not increase the performance of the car while modifying the cosmetic appearance. My personal opinion is that JDM parts are the Altezzas of today. At one point altezzas were new and uncriticized but as everyone got them they became rice. Will the JDM trend go that direction?

maybe jdm will get played out.. but i dont think it'll be considered rice.
maybe because jdm = oem.
thats like calling stock parts rice. just my 2 cents.
maybe the whole "spoon" worship thing is out of hand.. but oh well

Go with whatever you like. Go with whatever works best. Spend your money where you feel it needs to be spent. If you're going to tune a car for speed, do it the right way the first time and spend your money wisely. If you're going to make your car look good, spend your money wisely so you'll save the hassle of removing sh*tty parts and replacing them later.
If there are people who think anything JDM is the end all of everything, they need to get their heads out of their asses or thrown off their high horses. I'm personally sick of everything automatically labeled as "cheap" or "rice" if it's nto directly from Japan. I have to admit, most of the good parts are from Japan, however, that's no reason to look down on every single aftermarket company that's based in the US or outside of Japan. Some companies like Skunk2 for example, put just as much research and hard work into the engineering their parts as any other company in Japan. Whatever....blah.

I think the whole "JDM" thing will stick around for a long time but I am talking about how it is usually associated with a "clean" style. Just a nice basic look. I just plan on keeping my Civic for most of my life and I just don't wanna mess it up (in my opinion) with bodykits, altezza's, etc. Look at all the old muscle cars and hot rods that our parents and grandparents were into.........they are all classics that are usually kept in perfect "stock" conditions with some good quality performance or aesthetic mods. But to each his own!!!! I just know I'm gonna be the old fart 30 years from now out cruising around in my Civic with all the little kiddies with whatever the hell is gonna be hot in the future. I just don't believe that all of the trends today will stick around as far as the label "JDM" or crazy body kits.....conversions....and what not. But one thing is certain.......a nice "clean" car with good quality mods whether it'd be performance or aesthetic, JDM or domestic......will look good forever regardless of the trends!!!! Just mah 2 cents!
Whoa someones bitter
Jeff-
Its really pretty simple. JDM part escape the rice stereotype for two reasons:
1) They contribute (usually) to a cleaner looking car
2) They are usually of a higher quality and therefore lend a higher quality look to the car. Take headlights for example, take a set of JDM CTR headlights and sit them next to a set of projectors or black housing headlights. The JDM ones are OEM and are simply of higher quality. Same goes when you set a Spoon CF hood/lip/wing next to a Fiber Images hood/lip/wing. Also alot of the JDM performance parts (Toda/Spoon etc...) were developed for the track then released to the public, not the other way around.
I have said for a long time that its not about WHAT you put on your car its about how well its executed. , I have seen some big body kit-clad cars with wild graphics that I have REALLY liked, simply because the body work was all high quality, and the graphics matched the character of the car. JDM parts are simply higher quality (i.e. no taillights fit as well or look as good as OEM ones
