Default Type R motor....

Did a search but I still have some questions aboout doing a poor mans type r set up. Right now I have a b18c1 block and a pr3 head.

-What I need to know is what timing belt should I use?
-Which pistons is better, jdm itr or usdm itr pistons?
-Is it worth it for $100 more for the jdm itr pistons?
-What gasket set should I get, a itr or a gsr?

If you have any advice or links please post them.

as for the belt it's the same, the only one that's diff. is the ls one, cuz the gear on the water pump is diff. (size) and F*** the itr pistons if your going with a pr3 head I would go with the ctr pistons, it's a way better set up, I'll get you a set for 250 with rings. all day long, (brand new in box)

As for which pistons are better, it depends on what you are planning to do with the motor. NA, turbo, sc? The JDM ITR pistons will give your motor a slightly higher compression. Instead of pistons, you might wanna look into cams, CTR's would be the best stock cams, because it would have a + 4 degrees over the ITR cams. You might also want to instead of the GSR block, get the LS block, I might be able to get you on of these, IM me. Which type of tranny do you have? The reason why the LS block would be better, is because it would have a longer stroke then the gsr, and it is slightly bigger 1830 or so cc where as the gsr and the type r is 1797cc's. Remember, there is no replacement for displacement.

Run a B18C timing belt, head bolts, head gasket and tensioner.

the best way to do it is a gsr block with an ls crank, then your getting the durability of the gsr block with better lubrication and the stroke from the ls, that would be an awsome fast motor but you would also have to do cams with the pistons once you get into the bottom end you have to atleast do cams and the smart way to do would be to upgrade your springs and retainers also, that would be a sick motor!

no not if your running the b16 head, and that by far would be better then a itr.

I also thought of putting the ls crank into the gsr block, but as you can see, the ls block isn't slightly bigger for no reason. Because the stroke of the ls crank is bigger, you might have to slightly bore out the gsr block too. I think the ls crank would actually hit the block in the gsr. Maybe while your at it, you might as well knife edge the crank to slice through the oil. whats your budget on this motor? Buy a STROKER KIT!!! but they are expensive!!

1. use a type-r timing belt...the gsr bare block is exactly the same as a type-r, as is a b16 head cast.

2. ctr pistons are very high compression pistons, and unless you want to risk detonation and invest in some serious tuning, then dont buy them. i would go with jdm itr pistons and use a thin headgasket, like a toda or something. that SHOULD give you about 11.5-1 compression, which is perfect for the street, as opposed to 12.6:1.

not sure about usdm p72 pistons with that set-up, but im assuming it would be lower than that.

3. ^^^

4. any b16 headgasket will work.

no there are people who run ls cranks w/gsr blocks, just as guys run b17 cranks in b16 blocks

I have heard of clearance issues with the oil squiters when using an LS crank in a gsr block, don't know for sure, just something to think about/research......

If doable without any other mods to the GSR block, give me the information

you can shave the oil squiters or bend them alittle to clear the ls crank.
i have a ls crank in my gas block ls/vtec the smart way

Well I am sticking with a gsr block and found out that I would use a gsr belt also but I moust make sure that the new ater pump I get must have 22 tooth which is the correct water pump for a gsr. As far as head gasket goes, I gsr also.

I have a Poorman's Type R, I used a C1 block w/ JDM ITR pistons, B16 head, ITR IM, GSR head gasket, GSR timing belt and water pump without any problems, My compression is around 11:4-5. The Motor rocks, I managed a 13.8 with stock B16 cams, stock header and stock civic exhaust . With a set of nice cams (CTR, Skunk, etc..,) a nice header, exhaust and some fine tuning, I believe i can pull off a low 13 or even a high 12.
Good Luck
