Default OIL light blinked, now what?

a friend of mine raced tonight for fun and when we finished, he came to a stop at a stop sign. we didn't notice any difference and the oil light wasn't on or anything.

we drove down the road, less than half a mile, and came to a stop and the oil light turned on. he reved the motor a little and the oil light turned off, but when the rpms dropped, the oil light came back on and then blinked. he quickly turned the car off and had it towed home.

there was no knocking or any noise like that. we didn't look at the oil pressure guage cause he just turned the car off as soon as the oil light came back on after the rpms dropped.

can he turn the car on to look at the oil pressure guage or could turning the car on cause more damage?

IMO..... i think he may have spun a bearing and we can't hear anything cause its not that bad yet, but i don't know?

any ideas?

...
you should probably take a look at the gauge and the oil level

its not going to do any more damage then you have already done by just checking it

well..if you are low in oil...then naturally your gonna have low oil pressure.....he might be burning oil...i dont think he spun a bearing though....would a spun bearing cause a rod to knock?

what would changing the oil do?

he has enough oil in the motor.

he wasn't burning oil anywhere or leaking oil anywhere.

he didn't take a hard turn anywhere.

this could be caused by low oil pressure and or faulty oil pump.

yeah...i'm sure its low oil pressure.

he has enough oil, so its not because he's low on oil. he hasn't turned the car back on, so i don't know if the oil light is gonna come back on or not. i told him not to turn it back on until i posted up on here about what happened.

when i messed up my ls motor, the same thing kinda happened, but i drove my car home cause i had no choice. when i was pulling into the driveway, the car just turned off. two weeks later, i dropped the oil pan and found glitter like gold metal shavings in the pan.

did you ever figure out what those metal shavings were from??

This does sound like like low oil pressure, mine blinks on me when I get low oil, but that is very rarely b/c I check mine religously, so I always know my oil level

Oil light is for pressure only. The only time it will blink because of low oil is if you've starved it.

Your problem is most likely due to the oil pump taking a crap on you.

The oil light is how I know to add some oil to my integra. When the light comes on, I shut the car off, crank it back up and drive to wherever I need to be, and get some oil when I get the chance. Sometimes it will come on after a hard run, I just turn the car off and back on. 250k miles and still going

Check the oil pressure sensor in the back of the block just above the oil filter. Mine got broken and scared the dogcrap out of me.

wow. i've hear horror stories about how if the light comes on, you motor is pretty much screwed. the light indicates LOW PRESSURE not LOW LEVEL. low pressure can be due to low oil level though.

remove oil pressure switch, and put a manual gauge in it's place then crank it and see if you are loosing pressure.

a buddy of mine had the same prob. Sitting at a light not turnihg or moving or
anything just sitting there waiting and the oil light came on, rev up oil light goes
out, about a week or two or a month later he had to pull the and replace spun bearings because the oil pump went bad which is why the oil light came on due to low oil pressure from the pump.

Just because the oil light comes on, that DOES NOT mean your motor is screwed. Check your oil level, all honda motors will burn a little amount of oil. Mine has a slow leak from the oil drain plug, and Ive driven lots of miles after the low oil light has come on and gone back off. When I recently checked the compression of the engine, it was 205 all across the board.

as stated above, the oil level is FINE.

so its not an oil level problem.

i'm going to tell him to start up the car and see what the oil pressure reads. i'll post back the results.
