Default 98 4CYL Auto Tranny Probs

I've been having issues w/ my tranny slipping/ miss shifting the past two days. It's a 98 4cyl auto w/ apprx. 74K miles. I don't do any kind of racing w/ it, no neutral drops, nothing. Coming home from work Thurs. night I'm within like 5 blocks of my house and the CEL light comes on and the tranny doesn't want to upshift/downshift. It revs up between 3-4k rpm before it does something. Great, now what. Get home, have my brother pull the code, Code P0703 - Incorrect Gear Ratio. I guess not too many have heard of this on the 4cyl trannies. I have him reset it and today I do some errands, go to work, and it shifts fine. Got me. Coming home tonight doing 65 exactly because now I'm watching for something to go wrong and sure enough CEL back on this time it feels as if the car can't go any faster than 65. I catch my exit and when I come to a stop the car jerks forward. It just gets better. The speed limit is now 50 and my car doesn't even wanna get up to 40 . I get off the first exit, call my bro to meet me somewhere and follow me home. When we meet I check the fluid and it looks fine but smells like ****.

On the way back home (about 10min) it doesn't do anything (speed limit is 35 now) but once I turn down a side street it starts doing it's little thing again. Pull the codes again and get P1739 - Manufacturer Control Tran-something, and P0740 - TCC Circuit Malfunction.

So anybody got an idea of what I'm looking at here? New tranny most likely? Solenoid, burnt clutches in the tranny itself? In case it matters any, most of my driving is done between 45 and 75mph and it's always in D4 unless I need to pass someone or doing down a steep hill then I sometimes put it in D3, but that's rare.

Did you check with the local Honda dealer to see if you can fall into the 8/80 extended warranty?Might be worth a phone call to get a free trans. Don't clear the codes before you go to the dealer, or they won't do anything.

I believe they extended the warranty on the 98-02 auto trannys to 100k. There was a thread about it not too long ago but I couldnt find it or remember the name. One guy was supposedly able to get a whole new tranny and it didnt cost him a penny. Also I think the warranty might be a bit different for 98-00. Either way, it sounds like its time to visit the dealer. Hopefully mine will be stay good, has been so far at 42k but with the way I treat it...

I think the extended warranty was only for the 00-01 model years. You might get some "goodwill" help from Honda if you complain to the district manager and have your maintence recipts.

Only problem w/ calling the dealer is I've never taken the car to them for any maintenance other than a recall that came out like a year ago. I've done everything else maintenance wise. As for clearing the codes, I already did, can't they just go through the computer and see what codes have come up in the past?
