Hey guys i just recently pulled my motor to build it for my new turbo set up (cant wait). While the block is torn down and getting machined my dad keeps telling me to paint it with that fire engine red 1200 degree paint to match my car and to spice up the engine bay a bit. He tells me its what we used to do (with the v8 cars of his day). I was just wondering what your guys's input was on this and if anyone has done this. Would this be considered "ricey?" If anyone has done this and has pics please post....Thanks

 

If it were me, id paint it silver to match the blocks original color.
As far as paint imo I wouldnt do something so flashy, maybe black. I think you may get sick of the red and then it will be to late.

 

if its the same "back in the day" red im thinking about then its damn near orange

I think it's a great idea. You'll definitely be unique. If it'll make you and your dad happy, do it!

 

I painted my block flat black on my b20 vtec.. It looked pretty good

 

black would look really well and not be too flashy

 

they have VHT 1500 deg paint now. prep the block really well, file down casting marks and isht. make it real nice and paint it. 1 thing I found was that hi temp paint is REALLY RUNNY!!!! so make sure you go very slow with the coats!! I'm not much for red, but you know what... if it'll make ur dad happy, then DO IT!

I agree with that....I mean, you may only like it a little bit, but to make your dad happy, it would be all worth it

 

if your dad is paying for your parts then i guess making him happy is a plus

That's a really kind way of looking at it...

 

I used to work at an automotive detail shop.
I wouldn't paint flat black - there's not enough contrast to easily spot fluid leaks.

 

painted block what's that 30 extra hp ? just jokin

 

Iron blocks get owned by moisture.... Aluminum blocks look nice hot tanked and cleaned and clear coated.

dude, dont do it ricer red

use duplicolor DH 1602... its alluminum color and it sticks to anything, and its high heat

it will make your engine look clean instead of "spicey"

 

I love painting build ups. I painted my last D series Honda Blue....that with a new looking head and tranny was pretty dope. My bro painted his NA H22 setup for his hatch: orange block, black head, and aluminum tranny with orange valve cover. Looks very clean!

i like silver IMO

 

Don't paint it! "Back in the day" They painted cast iron blocks cause they rusted sooo easy!

Aluminum however disapates heat better and I would not want to trap in any heat especially if you are building it for turbo or high RPM's...My 2 cents!

 

alright thanks guys. My dad doesnt have to be the happy one here he just brought it up to me because he wanted it to be unique cause i know i havent seen any hondas around here with painted blocks. But thanks all for the pictures and advice. Im still deciding. I think the red would be a bit much. i will probably either go silver or black.
