Hydrolock Risk of Removing Intake Resonator...
Hi guys, I just took the intake resonator off my 92 S and put in a K&N drop-in filter to see if I could free up some air to my underpowered lude. I was wondering if I am running the risk of hydrolock by driving on a rainy freeway. When I say rain I mean heavy rain where you get the little "streams" of ~2" deep water running across the freeway that make you hydroplane. Since the resonator was removed, the air that was being pulled from up behind the headlight is now being pulled from the hole in the bottom of the airbox.
Thanks for the help

Yeah, I've heard that, but I have also heard that spray can sometimes get sucked into the intake and cause sputtering/stalling so I just wanna be safe.
a "spray" of water wont do anything b/c most likely it'll evaporate before it even reaches the TB. with your stock intake, the water basically has to be above your engine in order to hydro. so unless your driving in a highway where the water is engine high, u have nothing to worry about

My exact thoughts but be like me, dont drive in the rain unless you have to. Damn southern californians can drive in the rain for shhhhhh

horseshit
while your car is running, spray your filter with a water bottle used to water plants, and your car will stumble.
if you don't have a splashshield, a splash or spray CAN hydrolock your engine.
The following pictures were the result of COASTING through a 3" deep puddle at 35mph. No splash guard. the car had a CAI. the filter was never submerged, and this is strictly the result of water splashing up from the tire.

it has nothing to do with your car being lowered or not. Next time you are driving next to a car in the rain, look at their front wheel well when the hit a puddle. The inside of the fender is hammered with a wave of water, even at moderate speeds.
if you keep the splash shield, you'll be fine, even with a CAI.
if you don't, you'll eventually **** yourself.

i was wondering ... i got a sri in my car without a splash guard . i dont know if its possible, because the water wouldve short circuited something already in my car by splashing water on the battery terminals . but is it possible for water to still splash through the hole on the frame from the tire into my sri ? it was always a thought, but i never knew if it could happened or not, because i have thought many times of sealing up the hole with a piece of sheetmetal .

better than welding in some sheetmetal, why don't you put the splashguard back in?

well . the car didnt come with a splashgaurd . and i didnt want to buy a new one . but i wasnt thinking about welding anything . i was going to use a piece of sheetmetal/plexiglass with some drilled holes and ziptie it down .
so is it a possibility that water will splash through the hole from the tires ?

Oz...think they are referring to the stock splash guard...I had to buy a new one (mine's ripped)...yet to install it (waiting for spring) so I have to be carefull in the rain...

#7 in the picture

I had considered making a vertical plate that mounts behind the filter, that would make a water tight seal between the wheel well and the air filter...
but like many other fab projects, its on the back burner

isnt it there already ??? I think i wont be removing resonatr cause i dont wanna loose low end power for minimal gains in high end...any other way of getting cold air in there with just a K & N Drop in filter ??
