Quick question about d16z6...
I have a head and block both are d16z6... when i put them together would i want to use a d16z6 head gasket or a d16y8, because they are better metal gaskets? would this even work?
Also Im getting a new tranny. Will i have to use a 88? I know if i swapped the tranny on my stock motor i would need a 88 because of the different number of splines for that year, but does that apply to the new motor?

rumor I heard was the Z6 was slightly thinner then the Y8 but Ive never seen anything on paper showing that. Either way it wont make a HUGE differance.
if you have a 88 transmission , use a 88 clutch and fly with it.what kind of tranny are you getting? make sure its from the years 89-91 (cable)
I have a d16z6 that im going to swap and im wondering do i have to use the 88 tranny? im gonna buy an si tranny but im not sure if i need to use the 88 or not, since its never going to be hooked up to a 88 engine.

d16z6, that motor came from 92-95 civic's, not 88

No no you dont understand. Im swapping in a d16z6. but i have an 88 car. Im gonna buy an si tranny to put on my z6. but what YEAR of si tranny do i need to make it work in my car?
I know that in my 88 DX if i swapped the si tranny right now with a stock engine id have to use a 88 si tranny because of the difference in splines. does that still apply with the z6 motor?

only the 88s are odd ***** , <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by jadugartir »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I have a d16z6 that im going to swap and im wondering do i have to use the 88 tranny? im gonna buy an si tranny but im not sure if i need to use the 88 or not, since its never going to be hooked up to a 88 engine. </TD></TR></TABLE> what year si tranny is it? if it is a 88 then you have to use a 88 clutch/flywheel. If its anything higher then get a 89-91 clutch.
well heres what i did.. my z6 longblock had a z6 flywheel on it.. i went and bought hydro d-series clutch.. it was easier that way for me.. in order to run a hydro clutch and flyhweel combo, you'll have to use a 90-91 si trans.. imo lots easier if u already have a z6 flywheel..
sirq2u, I dont have a clutch yet. Or a tranny. Just a d16z6 motor and a 88 dx car.
CRX_Control, I dont have the tranny. Im asking on here what year i will need before i buy one.
eli_vang, My z6 also has a z6 flywheel on it already but its kind of rusted looking... im guessing thats not good... I wasnt aware that you could use any other flywheel? And how would you run a hydro clutch that sounds like a can of worms i dont even want to open... I just want to keep it simple and put a Si tranny on there. Once i know which tranny im gonna use then ill get a clutch for that tranny.
Now, My question is, what year tranny will i need? i guess i couldnt go wrong with 88, since my car is an 88,
but does anyone know if splines matter or not when it comes to motor swaps from a different year altogether? im not sure if the splines difference means where it hooks up to the motor or to what turns the wheels.

Very simple. Match the year of the transmission with the year of the flywheel and clutch.
If you are going to reuse the flywheel from your '88, get a 88 trans and clutch.
If your Z6 came with a "good" Flywheel use that with a 90-91 clutch and 89-91 trans.

thanks! so z6 flywheel works with 89-91 clutch? thats odd.
The flywheel on mine doesnt look like its in very good shape. I guess ill just keep an eye out for a good tranny/clutch/flywheel combo. Anybody got a good rebuilt Si tranny hit me up

all dseries match up with each other.. just that 88-89 trannies have different spline count.. if ur going to run the z6 flywheel, just get it resurfaced and run a 92+ clutch and run a 90-91 tranny.. it doesn't matter bout the year of ur car.. just run the z6 motor, z6 flywheel, a 92+ clutch and a 90-91 tranny... you'll be set there..

If your having a hard time with this even though everyone has said the same thing everytime, I would hate to see how you are on the wiring dx to si/vtec whichever you choose to do.
If you have an 88 get flywheel and clutch from 88 and 88 tranny. I would suggest checking out effinmotorworks for trannies for something good
