Top Mount Manifold.......All Hype or Not
I am looking at puting together a new setup. I am in the middle of researching different manifolds to use. I've searched many times and have found that many people are saying that the top mount is just a new H-T bandwagon. I am just looking for input on whether the top mount shows improvments over the other manifold. I am trying to decide whether I should pursue the top mount or should go with a more conventional manifold like the Full Race Prostreet or the One Fab Type One.
Any help on this would be great, I just don't want to spend the money on the top mount if it isn't any better than any of the other manifold.

I use a top mount manfold, to me the main benifits were ease of removing/intsalling turbo, Removing/installing DP, Oil return is very direct and don't ahve to worry about kinks or low hanging turbo. Looks sick too
I have a top-mount, and did it before top-mounts were "popular".
My reasoning was room. I can fit a T3 with internal wastegate in the car without having to touch the radiator. Other benefits include easy access to the turbo, all the hoses stay away from the exhaust, and the oil drain is nearly straight.
The downside is a more circuitous downpipe.

the biggest advantages are that it is easy to acces your turbo, the design is such that there is equal pressure at the turbine flange, and the equal pressure is coupled with proper cylinder pairing. We have made excellent gains thus far on the track with this setup.
btw i dont see any downside to the downpipe, only an upside as you can now run a 4" downpipe on the street, something that DOES make a difference on larger turbos

Thanks Geoff, happy to attract a big name. Any more info would be great. I may attempt to try to make one myself for a welding class project, but if I come accross enough money I want the Full Race setup hands down.

I've read that the top mount doesn't show any extra under hood temp increases. The reason for this is that the manifold piping is under the turbo and is better cooled by incoming air. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure I read that some where on H-T when I was searching, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
and why would anyone ever think that top mount or bottom would alter under hood temp???
think about it. they are similar high flow manifolds and they are both UNDER THE HOOD IN THE SAME GENERAL LOCATION!!!
if you were compairing the radiant heat of a log style manifold vs. a full-race then you would see that the log radiated much more heat.
more HP creates more heat. so when someone go's from a stock low hp application to a built high hp application the engine/turbo/manifold ect.. will give off more radiant heat and cause under hood temps to go up.
as for your initial q about hype. look at what those manifolds are helping people produce for HP which a lot of people on this site have shown via dyno sheets or video, so i would like to see how bad the guy gets flamed who tries to claim it as being hype.

The only disadvantage is the fact that the exhaust turbine is closer to the bonnet and the top of the engine. Without appropriate measure you may cause heat damage to the bonnet and other engine component.
I only use a simple heat shield with my top mount turbo and have done some temperature logs. The temperature near the turbo is slightly higher than the temperature behind the radiator but by only a few degrees. As long as you can control the radiant heat you will be ok IMHO.
IMHO some of the advantages for a top mounts are

-you can fit a larger turbo
-shorter air intake pipe, may gives better throttle response

here's why I questioned... the DP has more lenght in the eng bay, thats more radiated heat... the turbo is no longer getting as much fresh air to help cool, and we all know the turbine snail gets damn hot... although good point about the runners being in the spot where the turbo would be on the old style, so that probably gets cooler...

I can't say your wrong, but do you have or know where I can find proof of this? I was under the impression that the log mani's radiated less heat because the runners are shorter, thats less hot pipes radiating heat..?

I haven't seen a top mount installed, but the oil drain line should be a hell of a lot better, and the downpipe should be easier to mount/use larger pipe as well. Both good things.
