4 gen brake upgrade
So i need new brakes and i figure if its easy and not too much more expensive, i'd like to do vtec brakes ( i have 93 SI). How hard is this? i did search, and all i came up with is this...

which is basically my question, with no replies. So what all is involved? i just need to know all of what i will need to do the entire thing.
Thanks for any info,
Adam

You need the following, from a VTEC 4gen:
- Calipers
- Rotor
- Pads (duh)
And I think that should be it. While you're at it, do the NSX conversion. You'll be happier.

well, i do NOT take my car to the track or anything, just commute to and from school so i really dont NEED the brakes for anything i just have violent shaking when i brake right now so i figure if im gonna get all new everything, why not do VTEC. so i dont think i'll need to do the legend stuff, unless its the same price. I also have stock rims and do not plan on changing that either but i think i read that legend clears stock rims. i dont know. Anyone else have any input? Thanks for your reply!

Edit: all legend, meant NSX (and legend for that matter)

If you buy me the NSX calipers and pads i'll send you my VTEC calipers...
Your rotors are warped though. Just get some brembo rotors, break them in nice, and you'll be fine.

i wish i had money to make every prelude awesome, but i cant even make mine awesome. thanks for the info, where should i get them from? Will i be able to do it in an afternoon, i've never done it before to be honest... I do not know exactly how to break the brakes in but im sure i could look that up. thanks again

You'll need an impact screwdriver, you can pick one up for about $10. If you don't have it, you'll hate doing it. You'll also need a brake spring compressor thing if you want to change your rear pads, which I would while i'm at it. Get Porterfield R4S pads, i'm planning on getting those. Brembo makes front rotors for the VTEC preludes, just order those online, don't get OEM rotors. You'll need to get OEM brackets but you can find those online. Since they're stock size rotors, don't get slotted or cross drilled rotors. You'll also need some extra dot3 fluid since when you compress all your brake calipers you'll push the brake fluid back into the reservoir and it might overflow, so you should top it off when you're done.
In summary, you'll need
- Impact driver
- Brembo rotors (both front and back, blanks)
- R4S pads (front and back)
- Brake compressor
- Some DOT3 fluid
Hope this helps.

Awesome, thanks for the info. I may just do front, i was only gonna do the vtec upgrade for the front since calipers are about $50 each new... plus rotors, plus pads. i also got all new brakes a year ago this month but i spun out and locked up my brakes in the front and burned up tires and i think this is when i warped the rotors. thanks for the info though!

Hey is this true?? Are vtec rotors larger than regular SI rotors?? So all I'd need is the brackets and new rotors and NOT the calipers?? I wanna do this!!

Thanks for even more info. I didnt know that the vtec and Si calipers were the same... i thought i'd seen two different prices online for these parts. anyway, thanks for the absoluteprelude.com reference, that sounds pretty complete.

one more question after seeing the few write ups:
Must i bleed the brake line when changing the brakes? I just had that done not too long ago (my car was in for something and i told them to just do it) and dont really wanna do it again if i dont have to. I know i'll probably have to add some brake fluid when done but do i have to bleed?
this write up is pretty nice

but at the bottom the pictures stop!! I'm a visual learner and like pictures. ah well... i'll have to experiament! thanks again

If you don't need the new caliper, and just need the new mounting bracket thing, then you don't need to bleed the brakes. I'd do it anyway, but since you had it done recently it shouldn't be a problem.
I have a set of brembo blanks sitting in my room. I was either gonna throw them on the car when it needed the brakes changed or sell them. Let me know if you want them. You also just pick up Autozone rotors for cheap and it's fine. Good luck.
I thought Si has Vtec? If you're not gonna do any extreme driving then regular blanks will be fine, if you tend to drive a bit faster than most ppl then an investment in Powerstop or Powerslot rotors would be a good idea even brembo blanks with really good pads. I've alsways used Axxis Metalmasters but I think they discontinued those in favor of ultimates or vice-versa.

oh, oops.
get new blank rotors, don't get too fancy and save the money then use it at a strip club.

ha ha! yes, i warped my rotors after having them for about 6 months..... so now its time for new. i do not know if i need new calipers, i know that i have SI calipers on there which came with my car and i've concluded will work with the vtec rotors i just need a new mounting bracket, so i do not intend on bleeding the brakes when i do this.
I also am just planning on doing just the front brakes since 85% of the braking is done up front and the rear ones are only a year old and hopefully not messed up.
Knightmare69, how much do you want for your brembo blanks? If i dont get those can i just get some cheap ones from anywhere and some cheap pads from anywhere?

SI does NOT have VTEC. the SI came with the H23 which is non-vtec. there VTEC version came with the H22 which had vtec
also, i've gone to autozone and they said they dont carry blanks for our cars. well, they do, but they charge a crap load of money for them. i'd go with the brembo blanks over the uber expensive ones from autozone. i got my 2 front ones for 75 dollars with tax and shipping from IRP( a sponsor of HT. look for their post on brembo blanks in the sponsors forum)
