general question about gas...
so what does it mean exactly when my gas light goes on...am i "running on fumes"? does it damage the engine at all? how many miles after the light goes on is it safe to drive??

it's a reminder that your fuel level is getting low. there's generally about 2 or 3 gallons left in the tank. i recommend refilling the tank ASAP.

It means that your probably sucking the gunk off the bottom of your gas tank and sending it through your fuel lines and into your injectors... YUCK.... don't let your tank drop that low its not healthy for you fuel system. Sure a couple times won't hurt but eventually something bad MAY happen...

In a period of 3 years, my friend never filled his prelude's gas tank. After a while the tank started to rust from the top down. Eventually he could only fill his tank $5 at a time. If he put more than that in, the gas would break some rust particles free, they would get sucked throught the fuel lines, and both his fuel filters would be fucked in a matter of hours.
So yes, filling up can also be considered routine maintenence.
