why does dx OVERHEAT when i simply add an AIR FILTER?
so my gf has a '95 4 door lx, and i was just messin around since i end up driving it more than she does, and i took the stock filter off and put an AM one on.
so it gets a lot more air and you can really hear it with the stock muffler.
but, the needle in the gauge cluster starts to flucuate, and then rip up to hot really fast . then it is all messed up.
so a mechanic we know looked at it (i put the stock filter on and it still did this)
and aparently he said we had air bubles stuck in the radiator,
and he showed me on the thermostat housing, there is this little nipple/purge valve and when you top off your fluid, you have to bleed it through there so there is no air in it. thats wierd i thought.
anyways, i did not relate the overheating probles to the air filter. so couple months later i slap the filter back on , and damn, same thing.
overheats like a horny dog.
so i take the air filter back off and purge the radiator bubles out, and its fine.
so what would make it overheat everytime i add an air filter to it?
the only i can think of, and didnt try yet, was that when i put the filter on i should unplug the battery so that the computer resets,
maybe it is thinking its getting a certain amount of air, and when i put the filter on, it leans it out cause it to overheat?
this is really wierd, as every car i messed with never did this before, even without reseting it.
any input appreciated. thanks.

I think coinsidence. Make sure you have coolant in your overflow bottle because it if is empty, your cooling system is just sucking up air to fill in for the coolant which causes the overheat. Look for a leak in cooling system or your headgasket is possibly shot. Get ur radiator pressure tested to.

it happened twice at the same time extremely after putting on the filter. gf said it was the damn filter she was all pist off, got in a HUGE fight cuase i called her an idiot and that letting air into the engine has nothing to do with letting the air into the cooling system. yeah there is a hole leak, in the radiator. it is sealed now it was small, but i think it came from overheating. i am not going to try putting a fliter on again but if it was my car i would.
so i guess no one could really tell me unless they new from expierence.
oh and the reserve was/is always full

This was not the brightest move in the world. What kind of person are you??
And no, an air filter will not cause your car to overheat. It was coincidence
