Default Best engine combonation

I have a project CRX and i was just wondering what the best motor would be for a mountian car. it wont be a daily driver i just want it for the mountians and some auto x would boosting be the best way or could a b16 get the job done. I think tourqe would be better than hp because of what i want to do with it.

TIA

I would look into the B20 applications.

Mountains? You mean like offroad 4 wheeling?

To get up really steep rutted trails in my Type-R I wish I had more low end torque. I too often end up halfway up the hill and either spin to a stop or bog and kill it.

Scott, who thinks you should get a Jeep instead of trying to turn a Honda into a silk purse...

probably for mountain use you would want a CJ-5 or CJ-7... i'd mount a HD 8000lb winch up front, on a frame mounted HD steel tubular bumper. be sure to get hold of some air-locker diffs and HD axles. a 6 to 8" lifted suspension should provide enough articulation for climbing over the rocks and trees you will see in the mountains. the B16, even boosted, will be way too weak; a stout 383 with a HD tremec tranny would be my choice. you'll probably want a full snorkle system for fjording the various criks and hopper puddles you are likely to encounter....

don't forget important safety features like a full cage, skid plates, beadlok tires, etc.

good luck and have fun!

definitely a b20. 2 liters of tire-smokin' torque > any mountain.

I think you should leave what you have in the damn car and get some drivers Ed on track/autox events and learn how to drive it before you off yourself on "mountain runs" (i.e. not do any sort of that jackassery).

But my advice is worth what you paid for it. YMMV.

Don't get too upset at RJ - he means well but just doesn't understand the real world.

That said, and based on your special needs, I think many of us would advise you to go with a stroker crank in a stock B20 block with lots of compression - but keep it NA so that it's relatively reliable on pump gas.

Scott, who still thinks a Jeep should be your first choice though...

You are telling a MODERATOR to go away, in a topic about being a mountain moron, on a ROAD RACING/AUTOCROSS forum? Are you retarded???

Who gave you real advice in this thread anyway?

What are you getting at????

I gave him the best com-bone-ation that I could think of.

Scott, who thinks we should tailor the advice to the individual...and always, always, deliver it with a friendly tone...

I'm sorry but i'm not going to bow down to rj just because of his moderator status.
mod. or not what was the point in the post that he made. im here for information from people who know more than me. and rr98itr has givin me a direction to go in
(Thanks man) also don't bash a little spirited driving through the mountians i live in them and drive them every day i do not need any drivers ed on how to drive my car. the reason behind this post was to gather info on what kind of engines are suited well for a brisk drive through the mountian and an autox or two from time to time.

I think you could try the FJ40 chassis instead. It's a lil more original than CJ5/CJ7. You could source a Cummins turbodiesel+tranny out of an old UPS truck for pretty cheap, custom mounts shouldn't be too difficult. If you choose to put this in the CRX you would def. need a new hood to cover the inline 6. VIS may have something available in carbon-fiber to save weight. That would give you a fair bit more low-end torque than the B16, boosted or not.

You could probably get a GC coilover kit with some like 12" springs or something, Koni could probably custom-lengthen some Sports for you. Don't know of anyone who makes a body-lift kit, you could probably only get 6" of lift with the suspension though that way. If you wanted to stick with the Honda parts, maybe the AWD system out of the JDM-Market out of the Integra Xi could be fitted with custom unobtainium driveshafts.

You may also consider a GReddy AGSM Type V, the new programming makes possible class-on-class action only dreamed about before. Good luck, let us know how it goes!

more costly than the torquey b20, but also a viable option, but if money is no object and you're really serious about the mountains...

I too refuse to swing from RJ's sack!

He is the Worst Moderator of any board on the whole planet!

On second thought, you should go to the darkside. Boost will be the safest option for all of us.

Scott, who is thinking about getting a Jeep for myself now...but I think FWD is best for climbing hill because I don't want to loop it.
