valvesprings..does it matter which side is up?
From my understanding, valvesprings have an UP-side. Specifically, ITR valvespring colors go up. I have someone that wants to sell me ITR valvesprings, but he doesn't know which side is up. Personally, he said his valvesprings he's running now is just thrown in with no directional orientation. So, does it really matter? Thanks guys.
Of the springs that I've seen, the OEM Honda and Toda Racing springs are asymmetrically wound. The more tightly wound coils face downward. On the OEM Honda springs, the painted side faces up. Toda springs do not have any paint.
The JUN, Portflow (inners), and Skunk2 springs are symmetrical, so they don't have any particular orientation.

Just about all valvesprings have a top and bottom! True, asymetrical springs should have the tightly spaced coils towards the head. On symetrical springs, look at the tangs (ends of the wire), one end is usually cun more abruptly, that end goes against the retainer.
All springs should be de-burred/ finessed also. The ends should be smoothed and rounded off to help lower the stress risers. Also, on some springs the I.D. needs to be champfered to keep the spring from chaffing (sp?) the retainer and cup.
Just a little FYI,
