agian 91 hf crx w9ith a fresh B16 swap runs great but the vtec seems to not work so i check the silenoid by hooking it up to 12volt and it works fine then i hook a test light up to the wire coming from the ECU and drove it down the street and it came on (the test light) so i thought it worked (the vtec)
but it still seems to either periodically work or not at all.
Thanks for the help

you have to let the car get up to operating temperature for the solenoid to kick on. Also have to be going over 30mph.
When the motor is still cold your vtec wont engage and have a lower rev limit. If it is warmed up the transition into VTEC sometimes cant be felt or heard, especially on most stock ecu's.
Buy you a vafc and you can set your VTEC engagement point to where ever you want it at. Also with the vafc you can see what your rpm's are with its digital tach( a lot more accurate than the stock one).
If you still have the stock exhaust, and intake box, you may not hear the vtec kick in as loud as another car with cai, and aftermarket exhaust.

no its obd0 thats just what the ecu says on it. its written in marker on it. I just took it out for a spin and the vtec didn't work then all the sudden started working again. it just seems to only kick on when it feels like it.

loose pin in the ecu plug or loose connection somewhere in the wiring up to the solenoid itself. Can also be a clogged solenoid filter. Wonder why an OBD0 PR3 would have 1995 written on it. 1995 would be a obd1 ecu.

hmm i guess im not sure i was reading other posts i made and i was told it was 1xxxxxx was the xsi but it would make sense the other way around does any one else know?
Are you getting a MIL or not? Several things could cause it. If no MIL...
(-) Dented oil pan causing low oil pressure
(-) Low on oil
(-) Bad speedo cable (intermit.)

It's not mph, it's 30 km/h, or 18.6 mph.

if you don't have the proper oil level or your engine oil is too dirty vtec will not engage or will cycle in and out of vtec due to loss of pressure or poor reading from solenoid. vtec runs off of oil pressure.
