would a bad fuel pump cause a CEL?
my dad's 90 DX hatch(bone stock) has been running like **** for the last 2 days. yesterday it completely died on him. my first thought was the main relay. i replaced it with a known good one and the car still wont start. with the new main relay and his old one, you can hear the initial "hum" of the fuel pump when you turn the key to the "on" position. my question is, if the fuel pump went out, would that cause a check engine light? at the moment, the ecu is NOT throwing ANY codes. because i can still hear the "hum" from the "on" position, does that mean that the fuel pump is still working? also, would a bad ignitor cause a CEL?

About a hundred million things can cause the car to throw a cel. What kind of question is that? Don't go trying to fix a car problem by changing every part you know. Troubleshoot it properly.
If the pump buzzes (for a couple of seconds) when the key is in the start position, then chances are your pump is good.
Now, if your dads car just died, you need to look at a bunch of things.
Is it getting spark?
Does it have fuel in the tank?
What did it do before it died?
