Default any tips with mig welding stainless steel? do I need dif. wire?

Im going to be using the tri-mix with my millermatic 135. Do i need to use special wire? Right now im using mig solid welding wire made by Hobart w/ a .024 dia. My tip on my gun says .23 im using. I also have a .30 tip? Whats the dif. between the two? Is there any big differences welding stainless compared to mild steel when using the right gas setup and everything? Let me know any input thanks alot. Nick

On the last question I was trying to say when I start welding is it going to react the same a mild steel would? Same concepts? Thanks and sorry for all the questions.

Yeah it should be the same process, but you need Stainless wire in the appropriate size.

.024 or .035 (just as examples) just have a different thickness with the larger thickness being a larger number.

Just go down to the weld shop, tell them what your doing, and they'll fit you with the right wire.

If you are welding 304, you should use ER308 wire
If you are welding 304 to mild, you should use ER309 wire
If you are using 316, use 316 wire.
There are charts available on the miller site.

Do you already have the trimix gas? Around here it has to be special ordered...
I welded my exhaust using er308lsi wire and argon/co2 and I think it'll be fine...

some gases are better then others for stainless mig. I ran into the same problem when I was doing my manifold. as far as the welding it will react just the same as you were welding mild steel.

I know that rule of tumb is to use higher wire then the metal you are welding.

ex: weld 304 stainless use 307 or 308 wire, or something similar.
