I am gonna stop all this squawking about selling my bike, and just spend a little money on it.
What are the odds that getting a slip-on would make me lose power? I don't want to lose anything, but I also don't especially want to spend $1K + for a full exh system and PC.
Also, what are some cheap suspension upgrades for the SV? What will swap over from the GSX-R apart from the rear shock?

yeah yeah, good choice!! If you don't get a PC and you pipe your bike, you may lose a certain portion of your powerband, depending on pipe, it could be high, low, or mid. I have an 02 so it's got carbs, with my slip on I did not rejet at first and I lost some midrange. After my rejet it made a noticeable difference.
Cheap susp mods, change the fork oil! You can get some Racetech emulators for your weight too, it think they are like $100. Obvious mod but get some sticky tires
GSXR frontend
I believe the 636 rear shock will work in place of the gsxr shock and actually works better too.
EDIT: Corrected some grammar mistakes, it's 2:41am and I'm still at work

Im not sure you'll be able to get a 636 rear and gsxr frontend as well as exhuast and pc for 1k....If you are going to do exhaust and PC hindle is cheap but still sounds very good.... I don't know about alot of prices of exhaust systems because where i live we only ever really see akrapovic (my personal fav), yosh, hindle, D&D and 2 bros and jardine....I know D&D is cheapest , akra the most expensive....i bet a nice pipe would sound badass on a v-twin but i don't know cause ive never heard it...all my v-twin buddies are on ducks and they are all rockin stock exhuast...

When you say "front end," what exactly do you mean? I am still a bit green on bike tech. I understand it probably includes the shock, but I am not sure what else is meant by "front end."
Re: the pipe - I'd rather not do the PC, so I want an exhaust that isn't going to rob the bike of some power. Is there a slip-on that is proven to not diminish the powerband?
I will do tires when my OEMs start to wear. I have enough car tires clogging up my townhouse already.
As far as working on the rider - I will do a trackday sooner or later. As far as gear goes, the only thing I don't have is a pair of padded pants.
The dude at the shop mentioned a steering dampener, or something. What the hell is that?

A steering damper...its a little hydrolic that goes above your triple plate on your front end, it prevents steering wobble and tank slappers and greatly increases your stability in corners, id say if you do alot of high speed twisties its a VERY VERY good idea, i absolutly love them but their not nessesary around the city....as for not wanting to do PC then just get a slip-on you should be fine with whatever brand you choose, slip-ons don't really do anything much, a SLIGHT increase in performance and its mostly for asthetics and sound...by front end i assume he means the whole front end?? forks and rotors and everything?? but im not exactly sure.
edit: for tires ive heard amazing things abiout pirelli diablos....sappose to be the best tires you can buy.

I know some people that have put slip on pipes (Scorpion) on their 03 SV's with no PC, and they say there was no loss of power, but they also say there was no real gain in power either. A PC with stock exhaust and good map would make gains too though, if you don't want to buy both.
By frontend I mean the complete frontend, triples, clipons, forks, brakes, and wheel/rotors. With the gsxr frontend you would have to relocate your speedo sensor to the rear wheel, unless you don't want a speedo at all.
Another route would be to use an R1 frontend, but that is a little bit more work, but would let you use the speedo in the front instead of relocating it...

i guarentee he can get a complete 636 front end and gsxr rear shock for dirty cheap, my friend got his gsxr1k rear shock for 10 bucks. i just got my diablos for $220 shipped; i've heard nothing but good things about these tires.

Agreed. IMO, if I owned a SV650, I'd leave it stock (because its a very capable bike as it is) have fun on it whether it'd be canyon carving, tracking, and just plain racking up miles. The only things I'd eventually spend some loot on is the tires (after they wear out) and maintenance. And when I think my skill levels have surpassed the performance level of my SV, I'd look into a new bike. By then, I'd probably know exactly what I want in a bike.
I lied, I'd invest in a good set of frame sliders
As for the exhaust, your butt dyno is not gonna notice a slip on. Maybe a full system w/pc tho. I'm an advocate for pipes mainly because it gets attention that may save your life one day.

That's what I'm after, really. I want it to sound like a bike. I don't need a lot of extra power, I just don't want to lose any.

Id love to hear an akra on a v-twin but i don't think my girl will be intrested in spending that kind of money on a exhaust....

Pipes are a must for any vtwin. Love the way they sound. If you're going to get an exhaust I'd just get a full and tune it to get the most out of your money. I dont think its a waste of money to beef up your suspension on a sv, but it really depends on your level of riding ability.
you gotta put three times as much money down if your going to do full exhaust and then PC and then tuning....and it doenst make ALOT of differnce, unles your tracking the bike or racing i think slip-on is sufficent

Well, I need this to be my quieter vehicle! I use the bike as my daily driver, and my car as the weekend fun-mobile. Screwy, huh? Such is the life of an ITR driver.

I know what you mean. My bud has a yellow ITR and he drives his Miata everyday. WTF?!
The ITR barely idles 'cause the fooking cams and the Miata is falling apart 'cause its a pos. BTW, reading (if you haven't already) A Twist of the Wrist II by Keith Codes will make you faster and safer than any amount of $ you can spend on your bike.

It does make a slight difference, my brother also has an SVS (01), the only difference between his bike and mine is that he has a full system and I have a slipon, they were jetted by the same guy too, his bike is slightly faster than mine, but I can catch up in the turns
