1997 LS ECU won't reset properly, stalling, bogging, need to pass SMOG
I recently swapped in a stock 1997 LS ecu into my '97 RS with a new '99 B18B1 longblock. All the sensors are hooked up but when I reset the ECU and try to bring up main functions, it will not reset properly. Normally, the car's sensors that pick up Cat readings, EVAP, and 02 will gradually register normal readings after driving for a number of miles. My ECU has been reset and driven on for three trips (car turned on and off) of 10miles each, but is not bringing up acknowledgment of EVAP, Cat, or O2 sensor (secondary).
I've brought the car to a 2nd mechanic, but is still doing the same thing. I bought the ECU from Skank_aSS_Dara, who claims that it was fully functional and straight out of a '97 LS. Any reasons why it would be doing what it is?? Thanks in advance.
The motor is also bogging and hesitating on occasion as well as having to struggle to maintain idle. I'm lost

What codes are you getting? How are you resetting the codes?
Go to someone with an OBD2 diagnostic reader and it will tell you if the ecu is no good or what the problem is.
BTW,

doesnt sound normal to me.

I was getting a secondary O2 sensor code, but replaced it and now it's cleared. As far as the ECU needed to check up on the car's performance, it's true as far as what I've been told by 2 SMOG tech's. I reset the ECU a few mins before attempting SMOG, but failed because the ECU did not operate long enough to check the vital readings.

So what exactly caused you to fail? according to the SMOG tech. Thats the answer to your problem.

Yeah, I'm positive it's not an OBD1 ECU. It wouldn't plug into my '97 LS harness without a jumper harness
Anyways, I dropped off a new OBD2a ECU at my mechanic and he's going to give it a shot. He said that the other ECU may have been fried, possibly having a burt diode or something. Hope it works

Fixed the problem. As it turns out, the ECU I bought was burned out. A new one reset properly and cleared the codes. The primary O2 sensor was responsible for the bogging. Apparently it was on the way out the door (nearing non-function) before I did the swap, but a new one cleared up the bogging and idle issues.
