Default GSR Burning Oil

Hey techs,

My 98 GSR burns a lot of oil... I have to put a small bottle (1 litre) about once a week (if Im often in the VTEC that week).

Some people told me its most likely the PCV valves, some others told me it would be the piston rings...

My car is all stock and has reached 135,000 KMs (~84,000 miles).

I just wanna know what is the most known issue for GSR engines burning oil; piston rings, pcv valves, both? something else?

Thanks!

do you have a loss of power? alot of bogging? backfiring?

i just blew a set of rings among other things in december...shes getting rebuilt right now..

no loss of pwoer at all.. no backfiring not much bogging, everything feels normal and powerful when driving ... but still burning oil...

Ive heard that if piston rings are worning out it could make a leak for oil to be burned along.. is it true?

it doesnt sound like piston rings...my car would idle, but would barely drive...you would have a loss of power because of a drop in compression...idk what ur problem could be...

does it smoke at all? any leaks undercar?

do a compression test to see if the rings went bad. you look all around to see if there is cam seal or cam plug leak? maybe distrubitor o ring, valve cover gasket?

Have you checked the PCV valve?

no leak... im not losing oil that way.. only burning it.. not much smoke neither...

but what about PCV valves? I heard that a dirty pcv valve can cause excess pressure on internal oil seals and gaskets...

Is your oil pan leaking? Honda pans are noted for warping and not seating right.
Also check your spark plug tube seals, could be leaking and going down the spark plug.
Is there any blue smoke out of your exhaust?

cnydc2, no blue smoke, no leaking... and I changed my spark plugs and wires and I checked the tube seals and its ok...

I presently opt for deffective or worned PCV Valve.. since I dont THINK I am losing compression or anything... I feel full power.. and Im pretty sure I would notice a loss of compression/power.

Ill checkt he PCV Valve... if no go Ill do a compression test, thanks a lot everyone!!

But at last, where's the pcv valve located?

On a GSR ? I think it's located at the back of the valve cover and down towards the block. Look for a diagram/picture on here or look it up in your service manual.

Simply unplug it (gently ply/pull it out) and rattle it, if you can hear clicking/rattling ? It's still working. If you hear nothing ? It's clogged and needs to be replaced. Good news is that it's a 2-5$ part. I change mine every 25K kms.

If it's shot, you will burn oil.
