98 GSR turbo or 98 LS/vtech turbo
Ok I have an option of buying a 98 gsr or a 98 se. I am gonna turbo charge either one. Which once would make more power. I am gona put a vtech head on the se. Both would be resleeved and get je pistons and rods. I would be runnig 1 bar of boost with the max rev kit. Im thinking the se would be better becouse of the ls tranny is stronger and longer gears. This is going to to be my street machine will probably never see a track. So whic one would be better
it doesn't really matter between the 2 if your gonna build them, especially if you put pistons in them casue yuor gonna change the compression by doing that, meaning the b18b has low comp. and the b18c is 10.2 i think, your gonna put whatever comp. pistons in either dude. now about the ls tranny, yes it's better cause of the longer gears, but it's not "stronger". it comes down to cost. how much will it cost to be stupid and put a VTEC, not vtech head on the ls? thats just a waste of time i think if you deciding between a gsr or se. if it's all out race then go w/ the se casue it's lighter. thats my .02
If you're building the motor (pistons and rods), go for LS/VTEC. I made good power with it. 11.4 at 118.8MPH on a very basic setup.

how much money can u save by buying the SE? The only difference in GSR and SE is the motor/tranny/ecu etc.. Im not a fan of LS/vtec, although it sounds nice and ive seen good results for it it just seems like too complicated and finicky, easy for something to go wrong.. The LS turbo is better for someone on a budget, all your parts are disposible, you can find LS's cheaper and the car does good with boost but if u r goning all out and money is not an issue do a GSR.. my opinion
why does everyone say lsvtec is hard to do right? just wondering cuz it doesnt seem that difficult to me (i've never built one tho). after reading some articles on lsvtec it just seems straight forward. like what are the pitfalls to watch out for? someone clarify please.
for the original question i would go with the gsr. its just less work for ya. plus it doesnt hurt to have those oil squirters either.

I do hear of a lot of LS/VTEC motors blowing up, but they definitely make mroe power.
I think as long as U do all the precautionary things before running it, you should be OK.

There's been alot of posts on here about LSVTEC setups, and its been beat to death. The setup is not bad, but to do it correctly, especially for an FI application would cost ALOT of $$. Basically to get the full benefit of the Vtec head, you would have to get stronger rods, pistons(optional) and, a block girdle to rev to at least 8K. Being that Vtec can kick in anywhere from 4k-5.5k depending on how your ecu is chipped, you wont start making those gobs of top end power your expecting until after Vtec. When its all said and done, you may end up spending 2-4k for a well built and tuned LSVTEC setup - BEFORE turbo. If you were to simply bore and sleeve your LS block to 84.5, get a good engine management system like Hondata, and a kit like Drag or Maxrev, you will have spent less, have turbo, and also have a helluva quick car already, probably for around the same amount as an high end LSVTEC.
It can be done, its just a PITA to get it done right. If you want Vtec, get a swap.
