2wd bikes
I remember reading about this a while back, but nothing since.
Something about a 2WD R1 shaving some ungodly number of seconds off of the RWD bike's wet time at the track.
Anyone have anything more current?

Seems a little scary if you ask me. I don't think I'd like to ride a 2wd bike.

Yamaha's 2wd bikes use an ohlins hydraulic drive system. There have been some others that used shafts or chain drive, but none were very sucessful.
Even the ohlins system is not very efficient and only transmits a small amount of power to the front end, but it works well, and does what its supposed to. You can buy a 2wd off road Yamaha in Europe, not yet in the US.
The 2wd R1 AFAIK was never sold as a production bike. It was just for Yamaha testing. The production WR450 I think it is, the 2wd WR reviews I have read have been positive for the most part. A little bit of extra weight, but improved steering and handling in many circumstances.
I'd love to see 2wd sport bikes developed. I'm curious how they will perform also.
Blah... yes they will revolutionize stoppies too
