Default Exhausts Engineered for Performance or Sound?

When a company is making an exhaust system (Spoon, Mugen, Type One, etc.) do they lean their engineering objectives more toward the performance gains or the sound of the exhaust?

I know they cannot ignore the exhaust's sound - because it seems so important to so many people, but how important is it?
