Better LSD for Type R. What to get?
I posted this topic a while back: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=77221
...and came up with some good replys. However, The quaife is a 1 way just like the stock ITR unit. Is there something better to have than the quaife, or is the quaife that much better than the oem unit?
I'm definitely going to put a different one in, but which one yet still needs to be decided. Any more advice?
And primary use will be autox (and street driving, but not daily).

Unless your stocker is toast - leave it in. For autocross, you don't need anything better.
For 1.5 -2 way type LSDs you will likely have to consider clutch-type LSDs like the Kaaz or Mugen. These are noisy, are tricky to "break in" and require constant servicing.
You have to answer this question: why do you need a better LSD?

Who carries the ATS unit?
I think the answer to that is obvious. He's got money to burn and too much time on his hands. Right, Todd

Hey Dennis Grant Jr, if I'm doing STX, I'm doing it right! Remember, I have Todas, CF hood, testpipe, etc all to sell
You do want an R to beat the WRX's, don't you?

jeff652,
I assume that you own the Quaife and I do have your endorsement that it's better than the stock ITR unit, right?

Yasu at Racingcraft.com has the ATS stuff. All indications is that Yasu is a great guy to do business with, though I haven't bought anything from him myself yet. I do have my eye on a ATS final drive and a J's Racing intake though

Absolutely!
One time I put both front ends up on jackstands (Quaiffe equipped EG, Stock LSD R). I started the cars and put them in first gear, allowing the wheels to spin in the air. I then reached in (with gloved hands) and stopped one of the spinning tires. With an LSD, you feel pull as it tries to transfer power. The R diff had maybe 50% of the force the quaiffe has.
Sell your R LSD now while it's still good and you can get $400 for it and put a quife in that car, if your serious about road racing (prolly drag too)

I'm using the KAAZ....
clutchpack one and it is a definate improvement, however the associated chatter and the constant need and requirement for "specialized" fluid makes it a very bittersweet modification.
I am honestly contemplating removing it while I have to get my 3rd gear syncro replaced....
Anybody up for a slightly used KAAZ LSD? It's got about 5000kms on it.
I'm done with buying things for the car I can't and won't be actively using.... my daily driver shouldn't be such a hassle....and these little expenses really add up over time.
Performance of the KAAZ? TWO enthusiastic thumbs up...
Maintenance of the KAAZ? One thumb up...one thumb down....

Black R's ITR beats the pants off of the local ATL WRX children
Err..... I don't know about the truth of the above statement.

But I certainly try!

I'm certain I'll do better this year than last!
(And isn't that what's most important?)

Spoon or ATS have very good LSDs . I have been through the Spoon and the ATS and they work very good for my circuit events.
Spoon is more hardcore comparing to KAAZ and the settings for the LSD is very much different.
ATS will be the most expensive ones cuz they have carbon plates in their LSD. Definitely lighter than any LSD in the market.

Sorry if this is a newbie question here. I understand mostly everything about a LSD other than HOW is "figures out" which which to send X amount of power to? Anyone?
I'm interested in the ATS unit...can anyone give some more info on it? Is it like the kaaz in that almost constant attention is needed in changing fluid, etc?
And hey, I only have two race cars
I have all the street tire classes covered pretty well. Who knows what I'll show up with at nationals this year...

That ATS unit looks sweet, but it also looks like a nightmare to maintain. I'd really like to hear from someone who has one.
Here's another LSD post from the ITR forum. I have driven Quaife's, Clutch LSD's, OEM viscous LSD's and stock ITR/CTR ATBD's. All have their good points and bad points so you might want to do a lot of research before plunking down your loot.
Eventhough most lsd only engage under acceleration the 1way/1.5way/2way engagement action only applies to Clutch LSD because of the cam lock plates that engage the clutch packs.

So it looks like a 1.5 ATS or something might be the way to go. However, a quaife is still better than the stock one, and if it can make up its mind quicker mid-turn acceleration, that would be nice.
