Default VSS Broken. How Are These Fixed?

Im finally breaking down and I want to get this fixed. I recently attempter a throuwout bearing swap and couldnt get the VSS **** off the tranny, so I tried to do it with just slanting the tranny, well that didnt work and the tranny shifted and snapped the VSS cable. I didnt mind not knowing my speed but now its killing me

Im doing another motor swap within the month and have a bare tranny here, what do I have to do to fix this thing, I heard the entire dash has to come out or something?

How much do shops charge for this or is it really not to invoved and I can do it myself?

LMK

Thanks

If the sensor can be removed from the tranny-all you need to do is buy a new one and put it in. The dash has nothing to do with this unless the speedometer is damaged as well.

The cable about 6 inches form the tranny is snapped there.

I was just to pissed to even see how it broke, I tried for about 30 min to get it out of the tranny, couldnt do it, later learned theres a c-clip or something, still couldnt feel for it

yeah, there's a little metal c-clip that is in the groove of the vss sensor, you have to pull back the rubber boot to see it. But, I would definitely not pay to have it done by a shop. I went to the honda dealership and bought the sensor and installed it there in the parking lot, with only a shorty philipshead as my tool. The only part of the dash that needs to come out is the instrument cover and the gauge cluster, a total of 8 screws.

detach the harness from the cluster, release the speedo cable from the back of the speedometer. And if you have the boot moved up at the tranny and the clip out, you can pull it all out into the cabin. putting the sensor in, you have to push the sensor into the tranny but, look inside the tranny for a groove, you will match that groove with the outline of the vss sensor, it basically looks like a keyhole and you line up the vss as if it was a key. put the c-clip back in, give it a slight tug.

if it feels snug then you have it it there right. run the line back thru your firewall, into the back of your speedo cluster, and put everything else back together.

LOL sorry for no paragraphs, edited.

Ya when I swapped out my gauge cluster I seen where it connects to my cluster, I just thought running the new cable and all that through the dash n such would be very difficult

Got pics?

not difficult, if I wasn't out with a virus or flu, whichever one I have I would take picx of the step-by-step install, it's that easy.

These pics show how the cable is is attached to the trans:

this pic shows the cable where it attaches to the back of the cluster;
depress the tab and it will pull off/out

this pic shows where it is removed from the trans, behind the engine:
you have to work the boot and rubber grommet off and then pull the whole assembly out through the top...

Alright, I guess I can change that **** up when I rip the motor out eh

After I disconect it form the trans (already broken so thatll be easy) and unclip it form the back of the cluster, the whole thing will just pull out into the engine bay?

Is it difficult to feed the cable/plug back up to the cluster?

The hunt for someone VSS begins

It can be..
Tie a string to the old cable before you drag it out
Or use a coat-hanger or a fish tape like electricians use..

A little grease or WD-40 might help it slide through easier..

FYI, Also underneath the dash the speedo cable is attached to a bracket with a 10mm bolt. Undo that to get it out as well.

Yes,That would probably be the best way...

Pull the boot and grommet off and pull it into the cockpit..
Sorry, I did not make that very clear...
I was busy taking pics and posting them..

The clip is inside the black boot..

Yes, pulling it out the top would be best because of the size
of the connection that goes to the cluster..

It would probably get hung up inside the dash
if you tried to pull it through..

you can pull it out of the end of the engine bay and slide it back up in there perfectly fine...

think of it kind of like rolling a marble down the guide of your hood/fender. It is going to go you just need to push it.

^^ kind of a bad example but it isn't anything crazy
