Default Rear end noise

I had 4.44's put in about 1 year and a half ago. They have always been noisy and whiney. Recently I noticed that if Im in a parking lot driving in cirlces, it makes noise. That makes me think its the LSD not the gears. I was wondering if anyone elses makes noise when driving in circles? I was also thinking if it might be my axles or bearings? Any ideas? Im draining the fluid this weekend and checking it.

hahaha why are you driving in circles in the first place?? hehehehe.... but yeah it could be your lsd.. i don't see why that would go bad tho... have you checked your axels and everything to make sure nothing looks out of place or loose??

jackson dirves in circles cause he wants to intentionally spin out.

i dont think its your gears, you might be right on the lsd theory.

could it be a wheel bearing maybe?

Well see what happens when we drain the fluid and jack up the car. I can spin the wheels and see if I hear anything or if Nishants stands are strong enough. We can actually engage the gear and listen while it spins in the air.

i wouldn't wish that upon anyone. will see how it goes, we have two sets of jackstands, maybe we can make it happen.

Im not saying to drive it through the gears, I meant just engage 2nd or 3rd gear without gasing it. Ive done it before on a lift, not sure how it will work on stands.

After doing some more research on the subject, I think theres a chance it might be my wheel bearings. Ill take a look this weekend if it.

You wont be able to tell much from spinning the wheels with the rear in the air or on a lift. You'll damage the tranny if the rear is in the air since the tranny relies on a pump for lubrication. If your wheel bearings are failing, the hub will get very hot, you can feel that after a drive that involved little brake use.

If your rearend was noisy after the gear swap, chances are whoever setup the diff didn't do it right. The s2000 differential isn't easy to setup. I've heard mechanics say they'd rather setup an automatic tranny than the s2k's diff. You'll get premature wear from a poorly setup diff assembly and lots of noise. My guess is your pinion bearing is probably worn out as well as the teeth on the pinion and ring gears.

like i said earlier, take apart the diff. you've been getting the noise since the change, what else could it be

Ive had the diff done twice because after the first install, it made a whine. After taking it apart it l;ooked fine, had the backlash settings readjusted and put it back. Still same noise so I shrug it off. Had the diff fluid changed about 6 times sicne then just to make sure it looks ok. I havent done it in about 6 months, so Im wondering if its still alright. If the bearings and teeth are shredding, there would be some sign in the fluid drain.

Ive had the car in the air before in gear listening to the diff. Im not doing it for hours or gasing it, it shouldnt damage anything.

looks can be deceiving unless you're a trained mechanic and have had some experience with "looking" at things. I'm not trained nor experienced but have heard too many stories of places that either don't put enough time setting up these diff's or don't care or don't know. Unless you're running the ricks 4.57 gears, you should not get ANY noise, whine or clunk after doing a gear swap or any diff work. If you are getting a wine, something isn't right.

There's more than setting the backlash when doing a gear sway, there's the pinon thrust settings and pinion depth. Those are a PAIN to do and only a good mechanic will take the time to do a complete install. Deviating from setting it up properly will create extra heat, friction, and wear.

If you see metal shavings in the fluid or anything out of the normal, it's too late to "fix" it.

Thats the thing, I havent seen metal shavings yet. My tech is very good. He is a friend at an Acura dealer. Hes the best there and has done most the work on my car. He took his time doing it twice with the same results.
