Default Buddy Club Spec III+ Dyno

I posted a thread, https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1139685 , about installing some cams the other week and I had the chance to get them tuned on Friday. After a 5 hour drive home from school on Thursday, sitting at a dead stop in traffic on 64 for about 90 minutes, I hit the sack and waited to leave Friday morning for AR Fabrication in Winchester, VA. Once I picked up a buddy at VCU to come along for the ride, we hit the road. We made it to the shop in around 3 hours with no trouble.

After meeting Howard and Brian at the shop we got the ball rolling. The stock ECU came out and the Hondata goodness was hooked up. After some mapping we got the car to run and started making some pulls. The first pull was 169/113. Before the cams at a different Dynojet I had pulled 165/116. It was the first pull, so no big deal.

Dyno before cams:

First pull with cams:

After Howard messed with the fuel/ignition she came up to 171/122 or so. This was all done with the cam gears zeroed out. Per advice from the board we advanced the intake cam 2 degrees and pickd up 6 hp and some torque. Good deal. After some more ignition/fuel tuning we went another 2 degress on the intake cam and picked up another hp or so. We decided we didn't want to advance it anymore since I never degreed the cams. We then retarded the exhaust cam 2 degrees and picked up some torque, and proceeded to retard it another 2 and picked up a little more. VTEC is set at 5900.

Note to all those with Hondata and a VAFC still hooked up. You have to use the VAFC to change the VTEC engaugement point. Knowing this will save you some time staring at the laptop screen wondering why the cams are switching at 5700 rpm when the Hondata says 4200. Don't ask how I know.

At the end of the day I ended up with 181/127. I was expecting a few more ponies, but am very happy with the torque. If you notice the A/F chart on the final run you can see where she leans out around 6200 rpm. At this point the injectors were maxed out, something I was not expecting. Adding some injectors, or a FPR and having it retuned would probably gain me a few hp, but I doubt it would be worth the money. For now I'm quite happy. She just feels great. She pulls hard from 3-4k all the way to redline which we set at 8800 since I'm on the stock valvesprings/retainers. The car has so much more midrange now that you don't have to downshift as much. Putting your foot down in 5th gear on the highway at 75mph and the car just darts foward, no doubt helped by the ATS FD.

Final tune:

Howard and all the guys at AR Fabrication were really chill and good to talk to. If you need a tune, the dyno, or need to have some work done on your car definitely give them a call, or just stop by the shop. Lots of cool projects going on in there. Oh, here's a little video I made. Hopefully will see some of you guys at VIR next weekend.

Dyno sheets up.

Chris- you better be at VIR, it's enough that you're not running

I was watching the video and thought, "That's NOT a BC Spec III exhaust!"

All you need is some stiffer motor mounts due to mad power!

The scaling on this Dynojet plot makes it hard to compare to the first one.

I did some baseline dynos after installing the BC Spec3+ cams in my JDM B18c and was running super lean. I think part of it was due to the 4degrees of advance I had on the cam gears and I was also told my injectors were probably running at almost full duty. I have a VAFC but was told that any fuel additions over 3% would be retarded by the stock compluter and would be useless.

I have a Hondata and 310cc injectors ready to be installed so hopefully after that is done I'll be able to post up the results.

With a stock B18c I ran a 178whp and 126wtq. After in stalling the cams and advancing the timing 4 degrees I got a 166whp and no torque reading because the machine wasn't able to get any readings after a certain rpm.

I'm hoping the Hondata and injectors will yield some nice gains.

Also, is it my understanding that you kept the VAFC hooked up? Wouldn't the Hondata negate the need for the VAFC since you should be able to adjust the VTEC engagement with the Hondata. I have an S200 unit. Unless you have an S100 unit and it can't be changed like the S200 one can.

I plan to remove mine the weekend before I tune the car.

Yeah, I just left the VAFC to monitor stuff, and for the bling factor. I took the time to paint it and trimmed some stuff in the console so I didn't want to take it out.

181 >> 163

He has the same mods you do, plus hondata.

to BC3+, this post has convinced me that they perform on a stock ITR motor, so I will be getting them for mine. It's hard to find cam tests on "regular" motors, everyone has like 12.5:1 compression in a 2.1L. to this.

Those are great gains! Do you have the raw files of your baseline and final dynorun? If you do, do you mind sending them to me so I can overlay them and see the actual gains.

why wasn't the A/F tuned from 2-3k rpms? It goes lean at the worst possible moment, high load, low rpms....detontation just loves to appear under those conditions.

for all the f00s starting a dyno-pissing match...quit already, it doesn't matter. It's useless to compare dyno figures....this has been stated ad nauseum, why can't ppl get that through their thick skulls? If it makes j00 feel better at night, just keep it to j00rself and think about it before j00 go to bed each night for that warm fuzzy feeling, but please, keep it off the boards. It's just stupid.
