where is the thermostat and what does it do?
ok i changed my water pump and timing belt because the water pump was leakin and my temp gauge wasnt working. now the water pump isnt leakin but the gauge still doesnt work. so can a broken thermostat do this? car is a 91 standard hatch.
hey there,
don't think the thermostat would cause this...you might want to check the temperature sending unit on the back of the block. mine went out and my gauge did all kinds of weird stuff.
to answer your question though, the thermostat, if you follow the radiator hose down you will find it.

ok i just got some coolant and heres whats goin on. i start it and leave it on for a while. the heat and the upper radiator hose is warm. but the temp gauge and the lower is still cold. so i keep it on for about ten more minutes the whole engine is warm now and the temp gauge goes up to like 40% right below halfway mark. but the lower radiator hose is still cold. doenst this mean that the thermostat isnt opening? and this is a thermostat problem right?
If the thermostat was stuck OPEN, (or if it opens prematurely) you would have no heat. If it's stuck closed you would overheat. All depending on the temperature where you are the symptoms could be slightly different. As long as your car is at operating temperature and blows hot, there's nothing to worry about yet.
P.S. Lots of people mistake just having some air in the cooling system as a bad thermostat.

ok what about this then... im thinkin thermostat...
if i let my car sit for around 20mins, it gets to half way hot, any longer it takes just seconds for it to overheat... then if i let the car warm up to normal temp before i drive off, about a minute later the temperature gauge is below the line, and its not blowing any heat at all...

definately the thermostat. also check to see that the fan is coming on. if it's not then the engine isn't producing enough heat therefore thermostat isn't closing. make sure you check to see if there is any air in the system. i had a major (or what i thought was major) problem with my gauges. the temp kept going up and down. all the way hot all the way cold. and i almost took my head apart, but it just turned out i had air in my system.....
I was having the same problem, would blow cold air, overheat, and the radiator hoses were rock hard. I just changed the Tstat and now it doesn't overheat, the hoses are soft when at operating temp, but it never started blowing hot air. What could be the problem?
how can a person bleed the air out of the cooling system?
I'm having the problem of my temp guage working 1/2 the time, and no heater at all. I'm looking into replacing the thermostat. but if that doesn't fix the heater problem then what do i do?

Either use the bleeder valve or just leave the cap off. Air rises and it will rise to the highest point.

yeah, like everyone else said, if the upper hose is getting hot(along with the motor) but the lower hose is still cold...its the thermostat, the thermostat is staying closed......and, also, just so you know, when you go to put the new thermostat on, make sure they give you the correct gasket(same as the one you take out), and also that you put it in the correct way....theres usually 2 little rubber nipples on the gasket, and they have to go in a certain way....you'll see, once its out.

if you are having a problem with the heater after that you might want to check the heater core. it sucks but it could be the problem...

The sensor on the back of the block is a fan switch and does not interact with the coolant temp gauge..

Is the thermostat in the same place on a a6 engine too? I figured it was at the end of the upper rad hose like on my supra, guess not.

Yes there are two.. one is the fan switch (two prong)
the other is a oil pressure switch ( one prong )

Title of this thread made me think of, :ahnold: Who is your daddy and what does he do? :ahnold:
Sorry had to do it. But yea your problem sounds like a thermostat. It could also be possible that the heater core is shot too, as in you have 2problems here and not just one.
