Default Turbo LS questions

Hey guys, I am very new to this site, and tuning, but I can feel myself getting pulled in. This site has been awesome for learning the basics about my car (which is pretty much stock engine wise). I have a 94 ls with 105K miles on it am I am considering putting some money under the hood. I have a couple of questions about turboing my car. First off, what would I expect to pay for a basic turbo kit, with installation? Would all would I have to mod to support a turbo? How does a turbo affect gas milaege? How much horsepower would I gain? Will a turbo affect the life of my engine, because I am in college and my car is a daily drive that I need to drive to at least 180k-200k before I get a new car. If I have any more questions I will post them. I really appreciate all of the awesome advice that I get from you guys. Thanks

Sup man, welcome to H-T.

A basic turbo kit for a B series can range from 1200-6000. Installation varies as well between where you go, and what you have done. Try to save yourself some loot and install some of the parts yourself.

You will obviously use more gas when you boost your car, but it won't be that bad. Whenever you had more power to your car, you degrade the life or your engine. It very well could last to 180k or even 200k... But Don't count on it. You'll probably have to spend some money on a rebuild.

My advice to you would be to read around this site, and other sites about boosting your LS. Many people have done it with success, and you can too if you just take the time to educate yourself about what youre doing. Do yourself a favor before you blow a lot of money and READ EVERYTHING YOU CAN!

first off, if you worried about gas mileage, then you need not turbo your car...IN boost you will prolly get 0-10mpg HAHA But Daily driving will get good mpg on a good tune.
there are a BAZILLLION posts on this...I also have a 94 LS. It's turboed and runs great. Turbo has been on for about 6 months w/o any problem. On a LS you have very low compression, therefore you can run a good 10psi and be pretty safe as long as you dont bang on her every day. I gained over 100whp on my setup.
If you really want reliabilty and want good power you need to spend ALOT of cash and do it right the first time SO...get
-CP forged pistons
-Eagle forged rods
-ARP wrist pins
-ARP head studs
-Crower cams
-sleeve the block
YES, its a **** load of money, but if you want a almost bulletproof engine you can run on 15psi ALL DAY, you can with that setup. Go with a 60-1 turbo. GL MAN! join the world of boost

Just about everything that had to be said has been already. But I'll just reiterate and add my 2 cents.

A kit can cost about 1900 - 4000 depending on what company and what is included in each kit. I'm not sure what installation would cost, but your best bet would to learn more about your car before turboing it. This way you have enough knowledge that you won't screw up your car. Then install it yourself. The best way to gain knowledge on your own car is to do the work yourself.

As for power and reliability, it basically comes down to tuning. Go to a quality tuner and have a good fuel management system and you'll put down some pretty good numbers along with making sure it will last. Also make sure you keep up with your general maintence and you should be good.
