questions about "HX" rims and SI hub caps
I'm interested in what "red-civic-standard" did with his wheel combination (and have had problems contacting him)!
As I understand it; he is using Honda "HX" rims and installed EF SI hub caps over them, resulting in a totally stock look.
I'd like to know what year HX rims are applicable to do this. They are the same part number from 1996 through 2000. What is a reasonable price for them?
Do the hub caps (1989 through 1991), from an SI, need to be modified?
Do you just use normal, for a steel rim, lug nuts?
I don't want to sound pissy, but if you don't know the answer, please don't post. Due to the cost, I don't want to end up buying something that will not work.

It's in an attempt to make the car look un-modified! (aka sleeper)
I have an 89 SI hatchback with B18C, EX large disk brakes in the front and DA rear disks. I want to keep it all hidden!!! (the Konig Heliums I currently have show all that stuff)
It's mostly based on consern with thieft. (Ya, I do have an extreeme alarm system)

so you want the light weight hx rims with the stock look of hubcaps? best of both worlds eh. any pictures?
hx rims from EK civics 96-00 are all the same. after 00 they switched to a different style rim on the HX. you can find hx rims a little bit cheaper than gsr. i found 4 for 200 with one blown tire.

It's kind of funny that you would ask for a photo! It just looks like a stock red civic! Go to the EF-Honda.com web site and look at their wallpaper.

you know, i dont think the hubcaps youre looking for are from a 4th gen. honda started putting hubcaps after 92 on civics. i looked at the red civic wallpaper, and those look like DX hubcaps for a 5th gen.
wes, i obviously havent done this, but i do know those hubcaps are held on by tabs that go along the inside circumference to snap on the inner lip of the rim, but also by the lugnuts. if you just removed all the tabs, theyd still be secured by the lugnuts. now the only thing im not positive on is if the lugnut wells in the HX rims are deep enough to accomodate the hubcap.

if you get the hx rims, you have to shave a bit off of your front caliper bracket to let the rims fit on...
i usually see HX rims go for about 150-250 depending on condition and tires...

The stock hub caps that were on my first honda were only held on by the circular clips on the lug nuts. The car was an 89 SI hatchback. I've still got an old photo and they look exactly like the ones red-civic-standard is using.
(the kid that I sold the car too threw the caps away before I got interested in getting them back, D'oh)

wes, i did a search on a 93 4dr dx, and it illustrates the same hubcap #8. so youre looking for EG hubcaps, not 88-91.

its quite possible somebody got the hubcaps for cheap or whatnot from a dealer or junkyard and put them on your car before you. i see EF's rolling around with the newer hubcaps, but i dont think its originally from the dealer. the hubcaps offered as accessories for the EF's look different anyway as illustrated on majestic, but ive never seen them.

CRXGator;
Thanks for posting that up. That's the car I'm talking about.
Ya, I've got web site saved that talks about having to "shave" the caliper mounts. I think this only applys to cars that have the larger integra disk brakes (which I have). I don't know who wrote the page.
So, the remaining question is what lug nuts are used. I have to assume that "steel rim" lug nuts are used (with the circular cap retaining clips) and that the tapered shape where they come in contact with the rims is the same.
And to add another question;
What is the best tire for this combination. Keep in mind that I'm after a stock look.

i also know the lugnuts for wheels that use the hubcaps have a plastic ring around the actual lugnut to help secure the hubcap on. theyre ball tipped, not tapered. im not sure a regular auto store would carry these kind of lugnuts, i tihnk youre best finding someone who got rid of their old stock steel wheels that may have kept the stock lugnuts.

Although it's possible that the prior owner swapped caps on my older honda, I highly doubt it. I bought it from the original owner and he wasn't one to be changing caps. I ended up having to sand down the caps and re-paint them due to the paint falling off in big chunks, showing the ugly yellow plastic. When he saw the car latter, he asked if I bought new caps. I think he had checked the price from the dealer and that kept him from getting new ones (they are something like 26 bucks each from the dealer).
I think that red-civic-standard stated that they are 90's.

You are correct.

Straight from http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com for a 1991 civic Si.
#10 shows the caps you are referring to

yeah, luke (red civic standard) is running azenis.
his setup is amazing. best sleeper i've ever seen. i've driven the car numerous times, and am very good buddies with luke.....
NOBODY notices the car. the HX wheels are also much lighter that the stock steelies, which is the reason for the mod. the fit RIGHT ON also....
and yes, they are stock 91 si hubcaps. i have a set for sale also....kinda junky, but with sanding and silver spray paint they'd look good as new.
good luck man-adam
