Operation all nighter paint booth garage style:: DEATH TO DIALUP
hey guys!
so who's ever looked at pictures of your bike, and said...dam i wish i didn't have pink in my bike (BECAUSE I SURE HAVE). well it finally got to me and i put my mind to it, and started to get to work. the time was 11pm, and the decision was made. i am going to paint my bike tonite...some of it.
so here is a picture of my bike (check card or avatar). nothing pretty, previous owner dropped it a few times, its still my first bike so i dont mind...but cmon..pink? sheesh something had to be done.
my bro painted his car championship white, and did a dam good job so i planned on having him spray the whole thing GM black later this year, but i got antsy, so rattle can is the way to go!

the pink had to go! now, what color to actually use? hmm... well i dig black, so black it is. off to meijer at midnite to pick up some 99c (yea thats right) black paint and some 1.99 primer. nothin beats a good diy job for under a few bucks.
i removed all the fairings, which suprisingly wasn't that hard... took out the headlight and the windscreen and took the stuff into the basement. i started to sand all thep ink parts with 220 grit. i had known going into this, it was just a fun little experiement and wasn't going to be too **** about it, but i still wanted it to look good.

I decided not to mess w/ the tank for now... cmon i only got a few hours before the sun comes up!
now the lower fairing pink stuff was actually a decal... along with the pinstripe. i decided to keep the pinstripe throughout the whole scheme to break up the two dark colors... which means i could'nt remove just the decal, but i cut out the pink and peeled it off, leaving the pinstripe on the bottom fairing.

this is the crudball crap i have to remove. funny little decal.

i specifically didnt sand that part... just b/c i wanted to see the difference in the end result, and it was a small part, so i would'nt mind doing it over if i needed to be.
next, i took down the side panels, removed the little clip guys, taped off (what a pain), and roughed em up a little bit... i think i washed em somewhere in there too..probobly around 1am or so.

now at this point, i wasn't sure how far i wanted to go... but the dr. pepper inside me got to me eventually.
i removed the rear tailamp housing, gave it a quick bath, and taped her up
now w/ the rear housing, side panels, and lower fairing, operation pink-be-gone was ready to go.
taped em, and game em a little primer. inside temp was roughly 70degrees

remember, LIGHT COATS. this is what took so long, the light coating part. id make a coat, go chat online for 30 mins or so, then come do some more, somewhere in there i decided to start working on the front fairing
took her downstairs, sanded her up a little bit, taped her up and brought her back up
LIGHT COATS DAMMIT!

now add some blackie black... light coats. fun!
technically yer supposed to sand after you primer, but wheres the fun in that! haha if i was spending more than a few hours and a few bucks i probobly wouldve done this to make everythign perfect... but i still have scratches on teh blue that im not paiting so im not that worried.

now on to the front fairing... hang her up, and get ready to prime!
probobly somewhere around 4 am or so now..ive lost track, but im definately on my 6th or 7th dr. pepper! i finished a whole 2 litre that muahaha!!

more light coats of primer
i was almost tempted to do a silver or a white...but i think black is more.. well... im just a fan of black.

a little bit of black before we remove the tape...light coats

now take the tape off and viola!!
my intial idea was to have a little bead of that old pink /reddish to kinda gave it a little flair... cant tell if like it or not.

some parts turned out pretty good...

... and sometimes you just cant trust 99c tape!
not that bad, but still irritating, after taping was probobly my #1 concern. that is the easiest way to ruin a painting, shitty taping.

well... i took all the tape off and put all the pieces back together... overall impression... now at 8am... PRETTY DAM GOOD FOR RATTLE CAN!
i called smyth paint department and asked them about clear, and they said it usually does more harm then good on rattle can, so as long as theirs some gloss, they recomennded i just keep the paint ive got on there... sounds good to me.
now time to show this sexy beast off!!
i usually have the tank bra off, but it covers up the pink left on the tank (mainly) im gonna try to find some 99c black tape and tape it up and then put the bra on so you cant see any shine through, or just go through it and take the tank off and do it all over again! yay!
so use your imagination and see no pink! (or i will hotoshop it for you! haha)

yea yea i know its got a little purple comin out of the midnite blue fade, but hey id take purple on the underside over pink ANY DAY!
haha

well for the final product ( of operation spray paint...not real paint in a few months) i want to buy some vinyl and overlay it on the pink part of the tank and cut it out w/ an exactoknife...but for now, some black tape and the bra will do me well, here are some pictures from today. (next post)

Some black vinyl on the tank will work wonders if you have a steady hand at cutting it the correct size and keeping a straight line. Apply it with some soapy water and you're set. When your done with it, use a heat gun and reveal the original (pink) paint.

good job on the paint.
can jobs are the best dyi if you do it right. I spent this past weekend painting my front & rear stands. The buzz you get from a not so well ventalated area is not good
, but it's all worth it.

Agreed twicely.

So will that actually set and stay? And keep looking good?
The big issue stopping me from getting a new bike is color schemes, and how much it costs to have a bike painted (I'd probably just do solid black all over).
But if I can rattle can it, and it looks acceptable, I might just get a junker and new plastics and paint myself!
