The NHRA has fined Funny Car Bob Gilbertson $15,000 and placed him on two years probation for an incident that occurred Feb. 4 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway during a recent testing session.

The incident of concern involved the irresponsible and unsafe operation of a rental car in the pit area and a subsequent fire. Additionally, Gilbertson failed to remain at the scene of the incident and ignored the instructions of LVMS security.

Gilbertson’s blatant disregard for the safety of other competitors and the professional image of the sport are violations of the Participant Conduct policy as stated on page 254 of the 2005 NHRA Rulebook. Gilbertson’s team has been warned about inappropriate behavior on previous occasions, conduct detrimental to the sport of drag racing.

In addition to the fine and probation, Gilbertson is required to reimburse Las Vegas Motor Speedway for all property damages and direct expenses resulting from this incident.

 

Wow, and some say us Import, i mean sport compact drag racers are un professional... But then again, there is always 2 sides to each story, i would like to hear what he has to say about the situation...

I don't know about this one. Rental car proply late night in the pits alittle akly in a funny car drivers vains. **** happens, I say a frim talking to, reimburse the track and do it in the golf cart next time.

but for real some of use have been in the pits at a race after the sun goes down and no ones around. I'd like to here the whole story. Especially how a fire was started.

I don't know how they pit the powerade guys at vegas but if he was doing this dumb stuff in the pit area by the cars and teams I see the need for this but if it was more like out in the distance, well I'd just really like to here the story

maybe not at the track but who does have a rental story from SEMA, I mean come on it's vegas baby.

 

Apparently as they were leaving the track, they backed over their pit bike. The pit bike wouldn't become dislodged from under the rental car..........so, they drove through the pits with the pit bike under the car. The tank on the pit bike burst into flames (while still under the rental car) and then fully involved the rental car. The rental car and the pit bike were both destroyed. There are allegations that Gilbertson and crew were a little..........."sloshed" at the time. Needless to say, they are currently not allowed back to Las Vegas Motor Speedway....well, I don't know if that part is true. LOL... if that is true, thats some funny ****... i can see that type of thing happening to anyone especialy if alittle under the influence...

indeed i guess during down time at a track when you mix polluted racers and some kind of motor vehicle these things will occur. i recall an incident with my father that involved a mini bike, a ramp and a volleyball net....and allegedly some spirits.
