Please don't run harnesses on a car without a rollbar.... if you roll you will die because your head will be suporting the roof.

 

but to roll a cage u hafta wear a helmet otherwise u'r head is going to be smacking into the bar.

you mean dont run racing seats without a roll bar...
at least the oem seats will collapse in a crash if the roof caves in....
even 5 pt harnesses wont hold you up if the oem seat collapses...

I hear ya though.

 

I do participate in hi-performance drivers education track events (ie. driving at speed on a road course with an instructor). Harness are not absolutely necessary for HPDE, but they do a excellent job of keeping you "glued" to your seat while driving at speed on a road course. Stock lap belts do not adequately hold you in place and you find yourself bracing yourself when turning so that you do not get throw around while driving. By being "glued" to your seat, it allows you to concentrate fully on driving and not on bracing yourself for the next turn.

My 5-point harnesses are attached to a custom harness bar which attaches to the rear upper seatbelt points. The harness bar can be easily bolted in approx. 5 minutes; therefore, I only use it for HPDE.

 

I run 5 pts with the stock GSR seat and it works okay. The bigest issue is the antisub belt. It should really come up close to your crotch. With the stock seat it is out front and pulls the belts away from your body a bit.

Now, this is VERY dangerous and a big no-no in my book.

 

Can you give more detail as to why this is a "big no-no" in your book? You mentioned that you are using 5-point harness, so can you comment on how you attach yours?

Becuase you car has no roll over protection (bar/cage) yet you are strapping yourself upright in the seat. If you were to roll the car at a high enough speed to fully collapse the roof, it is almost a guarantee that you will die. The OE setup is designed to allow you to slide down in the seat. Your setup is fine for AutoX, where the speeds are low and virtually no1 flips. But for HPDE and track use, I would think twice.

This topic has come up many times in both the Competition and ITR forums. Do a search and you will find most people feel the same way I do.

In my case, I have a 4 point roll bar.

 

I have read numerous post on both the competition and ITR forums about this particular topic and I do understand everyone concern. I have been considering a roll bar in conjunction with my harness bar, because there is always a chance that the car could be rolled and the roof could collapse.

Bret, your web site is great. I have a 95 GS-R with intake, and ITR intake cam. Get the ITR cam, it is great!
