Subwoofer in place of Rear Seat
Im sick and tired of having my whole trunk space used up for my sub. My thought was to take out the rear seat behind me, the driver and mount the sub in the back rest part of it and then put black carpeting in there. Im not sure how it would look but I figure I dont let anyone sit there anyhow cuz my legs are 2 long haha. I have a square 10L7 So if I just build a small box that used only a fraction of the amount of space used now that it should be ok. Anyone ever thought of this or tryed it? I figured this would be prelude specific. Also would the sound quality be affected having the sub facing you?
Yea after doing some research im going to build a False floor out of wood and fiberglass. Im thinking about 1 12" infinity kappa perfect 12.1D. This way I will have plenty of trunk space left.
I used to have the same exact setup as above.
I was actually thinking about taking out the driver side/rear passenger seat for a sub.
I was thinking of creating a metal frame that extends from the part of the car frame that the seat lies on, and then create a box around the frame using MDF, then mounting the sub facing diagonally toward the center console of the car. In the end I would cover the box with either matching carpet with my car's interior, or leather since I'm planning on doing a leather conversion.
Before my 'corner mounted' sub, I used to have 2 12"s in my trunk... I couldn't stand the weight increase so I ditched em... Why does good audio have to be so heavy.

Bass clearity would be drastically affected by not being in the trunk. Altho with that L7 it would definatly still sound clean.
When you have a closed area in a vehicle with a system, it acts as a bandpass for the entire vehicle.
I used my spare tire well, and have 2 12" MTX 8,000 fiberglassed at a pyramid formation, with the amp mounted flush to the box pointing to the back seat. The system definatly will move your head. Unfortunatly my amp is fried. But im also running 6 CPU cooling fans and a lift under the amp for underside cooling. The only reason my system fried is because the amp was used and had a faulty set of mosfets on the right channel.
Anyways, doesnt matter which way the subs are pointed when they are in the trunk, If you were to put them in your back seat, Id play with it until you found the best sound, the thump will be the same, but distortion due to where the sub faces will be diffrent.
If you want my opinion, and still want your trunk space. Build either a MDF, or Fiberglass box that takes up just the back end of your trunk (near the backseat) and flushes where the fender wells begin or whatever.
A nice clean flat fiberglass wall painted to match your car or black would look very clean, and definatly put that L7 to work. Fiberglass slows sound waves down 25% more than MDF... therefore the box doesnt have to be as big as spec for that L7.
Fiberglass makes bass sound so much clearer, and tite sounding.
Search on yahoo or something on fiberglassing forums, if you dont already know how to fiberglass.

^ That left me with just enough room to fit a tennis bag and my school backpack.
With extending an enclosure from the back seat, depending how you seal the back, you could still use the trunk as a bandpass.
Also, you could simply create a badnpass for the sub. Perhaps do the fiberglass enclosure, or make it look like there isn't even a sub there using a sealed rear chamber bandpass system, AKA, 4th order bandpass.
Or perhaps you could even mount the sub backwards, still using the trunk as a bandpass. However, I would anticipate some rattling/sound deflection from the car's chasis. I wouldn't go chopping that up, unless you plan on doing some reinforcement.
As long as you use solid mounts/braces, seal off the enclosure really well, use some good ol' poly'fill to stuff the enclosure, and have a good amp/wires/connections... You'll still crank out some pretty good sound.
Also, if you're amp is frying... It's either:
A bad amp, can't handle heat
You're over working the amp
or you live in a really hot area
I used to pound 2000 watts (nominal rating) during last summer, and I didn't have a problem with my amps overheating, ever. Didn't use coolings fans (was thinking about it) and a lot of times, I stuffed my trunk full of crap. I decided not to use the cooling fans after I found that my amps were fine as they were.
I'm definetely looking into this "space saver" sound system after all my performance mods are done.

how about custom fitting one into the middle of the rear deck, where honda put em in the 99-04 acura CL and TL.....they have an 8 inch in there, i forget what brand, but it sounds nice.....
im not really much of a huge bump man, music sounds dumb when all you can hear is bass....
im putting a 6x9 sub in my vtec speaker grille between the back seats.....that should be plenty....

Since I got rid of my subs, I have a 6x9 in the back middle powered by a pioneer amp. Sounds great.
When I was bumping my subs last year, It wasn't just bass. My system was all around.
What I can't stand is ppl who have systems where you can't even hear the music.

I hate that 2 they have 2 15" jls or somthing and stock speakers. haha anyways Im thinking about trying out the infinity 12. Right now I have 2 12" mtx 6000 and they just dont seem to sound right they are in factory box and they just arnt all that loud and they dont get down too low. Since running my buddies 10L7 sounded much better, but im thinking about going with the infinity because of the amp, I really dont want to buy another right now. Im thinking a fiberglass/mdf box made to fit into the spare tire well, somthing simple but that allows me to use my trunk for once

Here's what I did - a fiberglass aperiodic membrane enclosure w/ a single 12" built into the factory rear seat. Keeps good cushion for the rare rear seat occupant, and I left the fabric attached at the top so it flips down to cover it up for stealth purposes. Leaves me about 98% of my trunk space, it's nice. Sounds great, too - blends with the mid-bass very well & is pretty transparent.

Still need to do some finish work - hemming the surrounding fabric, tuning w/ a RTA, stuff like that - but I'm real happy with the way it turned out. If you wanna see some in-progress pics of how I built it, check out my write-up on preludeonline.com.
